Alaska Aces News Release
Alaska's winning streak was snapped at six games, and their point streak was ended at 13 games in a 4-1 loss to the Ontario Reign on Saturday night at Sullivan Arena. The Aces lost in regulation for just the fifth time this season, falling to 19-5-2 on the season. The Aces and Reign will close their weekend series with a Sunday evening rubber match. The game starts at 5:05pm and tickets are on sale now. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.
The teams played a scoreless period to open the game with Ontario getting the majority of the chances and shots on goals. They outshot Alaska 11-5 in the frame, but it stayed 0-0 heading into the second. That's when the Aces took over control of the game on the power play. Steve Ward broke the scoreless tie with a wrist shot through a screen that floated past Chris Carrozzi and into the net at 6:10 for a power play goal. The Aces added to the lead when Ward found Garry Nunn at the inside edge of the left circle, and Nunn scored on a one-timer at 17:38 to make it 2-0. Alaska outshot Ontario 14-10 in the period.
The second period was the defining period of the game. Alaska appeared to get off to a great start with the first goal of the game at 2:08 from Nick Mazzolini. However, following the goal, Alaska surrendered the next 12 shots on goal and Ontario exploded with a flurry of goals. First C.J. Stretch scored on a rebound at 4:21 to tie the score. 59 seconds later Ontario took the lead on Vincent LoVerde's slapshot from the blue line. Ontario finished the flurry with a Derek Couture power play goal at 10:47 on a failed clearing attempt by Alaska. The Reign outshot the Aces 22-7 in the period, and handed the Aces just their fourth second intermission deficit of the season.
Alaska could not mount a comeback in the third period, and Ontario sealed the win with a Chris Huxley empty net goal from his own zone at 18:59.
Gerald Coleman (15-4-1) took the loss, making 30 saves on 33 shots, and J.F. Berube (3-4-1) made 24 saves on 25 shots, earning the win. The Aces power play went 0-4, while the Reign went 1-4. Alaska was outshot by Ontario 35-24 in the game.
The Aces and Reign will close their weekend series with a Sunday evening rubber match. The game starts at 5:05pm and tickets are on sale now. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.
