Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers announce today that they have made a trade with the Jackson Bandits of the East Coast Hockey League. The Nailers have acquired the rights of forward Bobby Russell. In exchange for Russell, the Nailers have traded the rights of forward Eddie Pershin and goaltender Tyler MacKay.

Nailers Head Coach John Brophy is very familiar with Russell having coached him earlier in his career. Russell played half of the 1998-99 season and the entire 1999-00 season with the Hampton Roads Admirals of the ECHL under Brophy. Last season he played for the Admirals again, now the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League. “Bobby Russell is a great player. He is a guy who can come here and be an impact player for us.” Brophy commented. “Last season he played in the American League and the season before that he was in the ECHL with Jackson and had about a point a game. This is a veteran guy that will play hard every night.”

Russell will be entering his fifth season of professional hockey this fall. He has played for the Hampton Roads Admirals and the Jackson Bandits of the East Coast Hockey League, the Milwaukee Admirals of the International Hockey League, the Saint John Flames and the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League. His best season as a professional was in 2000-01 with Jackson when he scored 38 goals and 30 assists for 68 points in 69 games played.

Before he became a professional player, Russell played three seasons for the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League. In his career with the Winter Hawks he had 164 points on 70 goals and 94 assists in 194 games.

MacKay and Pershin join Jackson after one season in Wheeling. MacKay posted a 16-12-1 record for the Nailers last season with a 2.83 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. It was MacKayÂ’s first season as a professional. Pershin played in only five games at the beginning of last season before injuring his knee that kept him out off the roster the rest of the year. In his five games he had five points on one goal and four assists.

The Nailers season begins October 11, 2002 in Reading. The Nailers first home game is October 13 against the Cincinnati Cyclones. For season ticket information for the Nailers 2002-2003 season, call the Nailers office at 234-4625 or 877-NAIL-TIX.
