July 30, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Utah Grizzlies parent club, the Dallas Stars, announced today that they have signed right wing David Oliver to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Oliver, 31, played in Germany last season for the Munchen Barons of the German elite league where he participated in 59 games registering a team high 20 goals and adding 14 assists.
The 6-0, 190-pound forward was originally a seventh round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers during the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. During his career, Oliver has played in 188 career NHL games scoring 83 points (42-41-83). His most productive NHL season came with the Oilers during the 1995-96 campaign where he scored 20 goals and added 19 assists. The Sechelt, British Columbia native has also seen action with Ottawa, Phoenix and the New York Rangers.
The Grizzlies should be familiar with Oliver, as he had played 211 games in the International Hockey League. His longest stint was with Houston between 1997-2000 where he played in 160 games. He also played in 51 games with Grand Rapids during the 2000-01 season. In all, he scored 158 IHL points (86 goals and 72 assists).
Oliver was an outstanding collegiate player at the University of Michigan where he amassed 107 goals and 98 assists in 152 career games with the Wolverines. Following his senior season, Oliver was named to the NCAA All-American first team and was named the CCHA's Player of the Year after leading the CCHA in points (28-40-68).
The Grizzlies could benefit this season from Oliver's experience as he may spend some time in Utah considering the depth the Stars have at right wing. Already this off-season, the Stars have signed highly touted free agent right wingers Bill Guerin and Scott Young.
The Grizzlies begin their 2002-03 season in mid-October with the home opener scheduled for October 18th versus an opponent to be determined. Season tickets are currently on sale and start as low as $400.00 for 40 home games. For more information, contact the Grizzlies ticket department at 801/988-7825.
