Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release

FLORENCE, SC -- Pee Dee Pride Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Davis Payne today announced the team has signed two rookies for the 2002-2003 season. Defenseman Daniel Carriere (Carry-er) and center Derek Halldorson become the first two rookies signed by the Pride for the upcoming season.

Carriere, 22, just completed his collegiate career at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The offensive-minded defenseman played in 135 career college games, posting 72 points and 124 penalty minutes. His senior season was his best as he tallied four goals and 19 assists in 36 games. He excelled on the power play, posting 10 of his 23 points on the man advantage. Carriere will attend training camp with the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League before coming to Florence.

"Daniel is a very strong skater who should also add some offense to our blue line," Payne said. "The fact that we were able to get him into an AHL camp shows what kind of player he can be for us."

The 20-year-old Halldorson wrapped up a five-year junior career in the Western Hockey League last season. In 274 games with Saskatoon and Prince George, he posted 72 goals and 57 assists for 129 points and added 521 penalty minutes. The Kamsack, SASK native enjoyed his best season last year with Prince George tallying 40 goals and 69 points in 71 games. Halldorson also got a taste of professional hockey at the end of the season appearing in two games with the Idaho Steelheads of the WCHL posting three points.

"Derek is a strong, physical kid we are excited about signing," Payne said. "Just like Daniel, he is a strong skater who should be able to fill a couple of different roles for the team."

The two rookies join returning players B. J. Adams, Joel Irwin, Matt Reid and Allan Sirois as players signed for the 2002-2003 season.

Pee Dee opens the regular season on Friday, October 11 at home against the South Carolina Stingrays. Season tickets are on sale now at the Pride offices, located at the Florence Civic Center, or by phone at (843) 669-7825.
