Wheeling Nailers News Release

JOHNSTOWN, PA - Coming into Saturday night's contest against the Johnstown Chiefs, the Wheeling Nailers knew that every game is now a must win. Trailing the Reading Royals by just four points for first place and the first round bye in the Kelly Cup playoffs, any losses would just push the Nailers further back into second place. With Toledo winning earlier in the day the Storm and Nailers were tied at 73 points with the Nailers holding a game in hand on the Storm.

In the first period the Nailers came out flying scoring four goals on former Nailers goaltender Mike Betz. and taking a 4-1 lead into the locker room at the end of one. Bill Downey, Mike Doyle, Sean Collins and Bo Cheesman all contributed with goals. Justin Kelly added a short handed goal to get the Chiefs on the board.

In the second period Mike Betz was pulled for Morgan Cey who was doing well until an injury sent him to the locker room for the night. Betz back in the game immediately gave up a goal to Eric Sonnenberg to make it 5-1. Then the Chiefs took off. Dimitri Tarabrin would score at 16:20 to make it 5-2 at the end of two.

In the third, Andress and Henrich pulled the Chiefs to within one at 5-4. With under a minute to play Justin Kelly was rewarded a penalty shot and scored to tie the game at 5.

In over time the Chiefs dominated the play but once again Sean Collins did his magic. Beating a Chiefs defensemen to a loose puck he broke in on Mike Betz and buried it into the back of the net for the two points
