Augusta Lynx News Release

Jay Latulippe stepped into the lineup for the Augusta Lynx and provided a goal and an assist in the first period as the Lynx scrapped and battled their way to a 3-2 win over the Grrrowl in Greenville on Saturday afternoon.

Taking advantage of their first period power play chances, the Lynx scored twice with the man advantage for a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes of play. First, Latulippe knocked a puck out of the air near the Grrrowl goal and backhanded it past Cam Ellsworth to give his club a 1-0 lead from Dan Sullivan and Ryan Lang. Then Latulippe helped set up a streaking Chris Leinweber who cut down the slot and beat Ellsworth high for a two goal advantage at 17:15, with Lang notching his second helper of the period. The Lynx out shot the Grrrowl 15-5 in the opening frame.

Play slowed somewhat in the second period, with each team only registering a single shot eight minutes in. Scoring chances began to pick up, but a five-minute major and a game misconduct against Augusta's Sean Stefanski put the Lynx shorthanded with under seven minutes left in the period. Instead of the Grrrowl getting it going, the Lynx turned into the beneficiaries of the penalty as Brian Passmore's hard work and determination yielded a shorthanded goal at 15:33, as Passmore scored off his own rebound on a shot from the right wing. Instead of clearing the puck, Greenville's defense coughed it back to Passmore who tucked it in behind Ellsworth and off the far goal post.

The Grrrowl finally did take advantage of the major power play, however, scoring on a Brad Bonello tip at 17:25 to get on the board and head into the locker room trailing 3-1 through two periods of play.

Greenville made it a very tense game in the third period, as Steve Slonina scored at the 2:07 mark to pull within a goal. Both teams had power play chances in the third period, and Augusta's biggest kill came with just under five minutes to go in the game as Latulippe was whistled for interference. Despite the short bench with several players banged up, Augusta would hold the lead and earn the win.

Jason Wolfe stopped 28 shots for the victory while Ellsworth stopped 35 en route to the loss. Augusta finished the game 2-for-7 with the man advantage while Greenville went 1-for-6.

The Lynx are back in action Sunday afternoon against the Pensacola Ice Pilots at 4:05 pm, with the Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show starting one half-hour before faceoff on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
