Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- The Bombers and Royals met for the tenth time this season tonight at the Nutter Center in front of a solid crowd of 4,370.
The last two meeting between the Bombers and Royals were 1-0 shutouts in favor of Reading. Early in the first period it was clear that was not going to be the case for the third straight time.
On their first power play of the night, the Royals made it count on a goal by Mike Kompon at the 10:35 mark to give Reading a 1-0 lead. The Royals would add another very late in the first with under a minute remaining as Shay Stephenson was left wide open in front of Bombers starter Mike Brown and slid it through the five hole to make it 2-0 Reading after one.
The Bombers found themselves in the same situation in last night's game against the Wheeling Nailers and did their best to get back into that one in the second period, and that's exactly what they did again tonight.
Once again it was the top line of Tim Konsorada, Jeff Szwez and Scott Cameron starting up the offense. Defenseman Alex Johnstone (11) made a perfect pass right to the tape of Konsorada (15), who was left wide open in the slot because Royals starter Cody Rudkowsky was caught out of position off of a previous shot by Scott Cameron (42). Konsorada swept the puck right into the net before Rudkowsky even had a chance to cut the Royals lead down to one at 2-1 at the 4:42 mark in the second.
The Fans were electric after that and the Bombers did their best to try to feed off of the energy to come back and tie it up, but just when it looked like that was about the happen Royals captain Reagan Rome got it right back and pushed the lead up to two once again at 3-1. The Bombers out shot the Royals 15-6 that period but still found themselves trailing by two at the end of two.
In the third the Royals proved to the Bombers and their fans why they are the first place team in the North Division with their defensive style of offense, limiting the Bombers to 9 shots on goal and equaling that total themselves as well. Although it didn't show up on the official stats the Bombers had more than nine scoring chances in the third, as they tried to tie it up, but Rudkowsky stood his ground and got a lot of help from his teammates in front as well allowing the Royals to pick up the road victory, 3-1.
The Bombers continue their 15th Anniversary season at Wheeling on Friday night at 7:05pm, as they take on the Wheeling Nailers. The game can be heard on 980 (am) Homer the Sports Animal or on line at www.daytonbombers.com. Dayton Bombers Hockey, celebrating 15 years of fun.
