Nailers Capture Walleye with 5-3 Win

WHEELING, WV ‚¬" Casey Pierro-Zabotel's three-point night paced the Wheeling Nailers to a 5-3 victory over the Toledo Walleye Sunday evening at WesBanco Arena. The win extends the Nailers lead in the North Division to three points.

For the second consecutive night Joey Haddad opened up the scoring, as he registered his ninth goal of the season at 11:09 of the first period. The Nailers took a 2-1 lead nearly two minutes later as Nick Petersen tipped in his team leading 16th goal of the season. Petersen has now registered a goal in eight of the last nine games. Toledo scored its first marker of the game 38 seconds later, as Dominic Osman grabbed the puck off a bounce from he backwall, and fired it into the net, to make the score 2-1 at the end of one.

Wheeling's Casey Pierro-Zabotel scored 3:13 in the second period beating Toledo goaltende Trevor McCollum, to extend the Nailers lead 3-1. The Walleye rallied, as Kyle Rogers scored to make it a 3-2 score at 6:27 of the second, while Andy Bohmbach tied the game at three at 13:23.

In the third, Pierro-Zabotel broke the tie, with his second tally of the contest. Pierro-Zabotel broke into the zone on a 2-on-1 rush, and fired a shot on the shortside past McCollum, as Wheeling assumed the lead once again 4-3. Toledo created chances late in the third, but netminder Patrick Killeen made all the stops down the stretch. The Walleye pulled the goaltender in the game's final moments, but the Nailers Kelly Miller, who was signed shortly before today's game, sealed the game with an empty net goal.

Patrick Killeen earns his 14th win of the season stopping 22 of 25 shot faced. Wheeling outshot Toledo 30-25 in the game.
