Reading Royals News Release

Elmira, NY - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (1st Atlantic Division, 22-9-2-046), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, defeated the Elmira Jackals (2nd Atlantic Division, 16-12-5-037), 2-0, at First Arena in Elmira, New York. The win, which was the third shutout victory of the season for Reading, stretched the team's current unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2-0). The Royals have now won the last five in a row against the Jackals, which includes two consecutive shutouts. Reading's Michael Hutchinson (win, 2-0-1-0, 30/30) made several critical stops-particularly in the first period when Elmira pounded seventeen shots on goal-and ultimately registered his first shutout as a pro. Elmira's Darren Machesney (loss, 2-8-0-0, 33/35) was equally good, but sustained his second loss of the year to the Royals. Reading got an insurance goal on a third period four-on-three power play (1-6); the Royals penalty killers kept the opposition off the board for the thirteenth time this year (0-5).

Reading got all they would need 9:04 into the second period when Ben Gordon carried deep down the left wing side and slipped a saucer to the low slot where a hard-charging Cody Wild redirected the puck on net. Machesney made the stop on Wild's bid, but the rebound bounded around the crease, where the third forward in, Tyler Murovich, crashed and punched the puck home for his first as a Royal. In doing so, Murovich became the twelfth different play to register a game winning goal.

Mid-way into the third, a sequence of penalties, including a delay of game on the goaltender Machesney, resulted in a four-on-three power play for the Royals. Reading capitalized when Yannick Riendeau won an offensive zone face-off to Chris Blight who tapped off to Alain Goulet, who in turn ripped a snap shot glove side on Machesney for his fourth of the season. Reading held on down the stretch for the shutout win, which pushed the team to thirteen games over .500 for the first time this year.

The Royals return home to face the Toledo Walleye on Friday (January 14, 2011 @ 7:05) at Sovereign Center in Reading. The Royals game day broadcast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show presented by The Works at Wyomissing on the Royals Broadcast Network (WRAW 1340 am in Reading, www.1340wraw.com) at 6:35 pm.
