
Stingrays Sweep Devils with 5-2 Win

North Charleston, SC -The South Carolina Stingrays (21-14-1-1) pushed their winning streak to a season-high six games with a 5-2 victory over the Trenton Devils (13-16-0-3) in front of 2,352 at the North Charleston Coliseum Sunday evening. With the win, the Stingrays sweep the regular-season series 4-0.
The Devils kick-started the scoring 5:13 into the first period when forward Matt Lombardi fired a wrist shot over the glove of Stingrays goalie Todd Ford from the top of the left-wing circle. Defenseman Justin Pender received the only assist. Stingrays forward Rob Ricci tied the contest on the power play at 11:18 with his team-leading 17 goal of the season slipping a shot under the blocker of Devils netminder Dave Caruso. Forwards Tommy Goebel and Samson Mahbod earned assists.
After the Devils grabbed a 2-1 lead at 6:06 of the second period off a tally by forward Ryan Hayes from forward Dan Charleston, the Stingrays exploded for three goals late in the middle frame to take a two-goal lead into the second intermission. Stingrays forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien completed a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush with Ricci at 15:23 to pull even. Defenseman Patrick Cullity recorded the second assist. Moments later, forward David de Kastrozza gave the Stingrays their first lead of the night batting home a loose puck under the blocker of Caruso. Defenseman Josh Godfrey and forward Jake Hauswirth tallied helpers. Forward Matt Scherer made it 4-2 at 18:19 rifling in a pass from forward Jordan Pietrus.
Hauswirth completed the game scoring at 10:24 of the final period with his sixth goal of the season from de Kastrozza.
Caruso suffered the loss stopping 32 of 37 Stingrays shots. Ford picked up the win knocking away 18 of 20 Devils chances. The Stingrays finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play while the Devils went 0-for-5.
The Stingrays return to action on Friday, January 14 against the Florida Everblades at 7:05 p.m. at the Coliseum and Sunday, January 16 at 4:00 p.m. against the Kalamazoo Wings.
