Trenton Devils News Release
North Charleston, SC - The Stingrays completed a three-game weekend sweep of the Devils with another come from behind win, 5-2, Sunday at North Charleston Coliseum. Triggered by a shorthanded goal from Pierre-Luc O'Brien, South Carolina scored three times in a span of 2:56 in the second period, catapulting the Stingrays from a 2-1 deficit into a two-goal lead. Jake Hauswirth scored the fourth South Carolina unanswered goal in the third to finish off the Devils, 5-2.
After sitting in favor of Shane Connelly Saturday night, Dave Caruso took the loss despite 15 first-period saves and 32 for the game, which at the time kept the Devils in a game that they led until the 15:23 mark of the second period. Trenton's record now stands at 13-16-0-3, while the Stingrays improve to 21-14-1-1, extending their win streak to six straight victories, a season-best.
Although Sunday's contest was branded by South Carolina finishing the game with four unanswered strikes, Trenton opened the scoring at 5:13 in the first period with Matt Lombardi netting his ninth goal of the season on a shot from the left-wing circle. Six minutes later, Rob Ricci's seventh goal in his last four games tied the score, 1-1.
In the second period, Ryan Hayes' second goal in the last two games made the score 2-1 Trenton at 6:06. Dan Charleston started the play with a takeaway in the neutral zone and led a two-on-one with Hayes on the left wing. With an assist, Charleston extended his point streak to six consecutive games.
Trenton played through most of the second period still in the lead, despite being heavily out-shot by the Stingrays 26-12 through 40 minutes. While Caruso kept the Devils in the game with several impressive stops, South Carolina eventually broke through when Pierre-Luc O'Brien picked up his shorthanded goal on a two-on-one. Toms River, NJ native David de Kastrozza put South Carolina ahead 3-2 with his 12th, and Matt Scherer made it 4-2 after Jordan Pietrus created a turnover on a failed Devils breakout.
In the latter stages of the third period, Dan Charleston, Tony Zancanaro and Taylor Vichorek were all involved in scuffles, tangling with Matt Scherer, Dylan Yeo and Dustin Stevenson, respectively, but the outcome was never in doubt. Losers of three straight, Trenton returns to Sun National Bank Center to meet Wheeling, Elmira and Toledo in the coming week. The first of the three games will be Trenton's first home contest against Wheeling this season, Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
