Condon is Kryptonite for 'Clones

The Wheeling Nailers won both games of their recent two-game homestand, finishing it off with a 2-0 victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. It took until the third period for a goal to be scored, as Cody Sylvester's shorthanded goal broke the 0-0 deadlock at the 2:27 mark, after swiping the puck from Paul Crowder. Christiaan Minella iced the win with an empty net goal, while Mike Condon was perfect on 31 shots, earning his third shutout of the season. Two of those shutouts have come against Cincinnati, marking the only two times that the Cyclones have been blanked in 2013-14.

No Goals for You, Either

The Reading Royals also watched their opposition lay a goose egg in the goals column on Saturday night, as they blanked the Elmira Jackals, 4-0 at Santander Arena. After making 15 saves on 16 shots in relief on Friday in Wheeling, Brandon Anderson earned the shutout, as he turned aside all 22 Elmira shots, picking up his fourth shutout of the season, and third at home. Four different goal scorers (Wiles, Cox, Tifu, Monardo) dented the twine for the Royals, who defeated the Jackals for the second time in four days, in a week in which they only face Atlantic Division opponents.

Nothing Short About the Value

Cody Sylvester broke a scoreless deadlock with 17:33 to go on Saturday night, as he recorded his team-leading 21st goal of the season. In addition to being at the top of that category, he also joined a teammate in two others, as his third shorthanded goal tied Denver Manderson for the team lead, while his sixth game winning goal tied Mike Ratchuk for the most on the Nailers. Coincidently, this is not the first time that Sylvester has scored a shorthanded game winning goal this season, as he also accomplished that feat on January 20th in Gwinnett, as part of a 2-0 Wheeling victory. The Kelowna, BC native now has four goals and five points in two games this weekend.

Help from the Sunshine State

Thanks to their two victories on Friday and Saturday, along with a bit of help out of town, the Nailers have built a three-point lead for seventh place in the race for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. After falling 5-2 to the Fort Wayne Komets on Friday, the Florida Everblades got their revenge with a 3-1 win on Saturday, giving both teams 65 points. Wheeling was also helped by the Orlando Solar Bears, who avenged a 7-1 thumping by the Evansville IceMen, with a 5-2 victory on Saturday, leaving Evansville with 64 points. On Sunday, the Everblades visit the IceMen, while the Komets travel to Toledo to face the Walleye.

Finally, the 15th

Sunday afternoon marks the 15th and final head-to-head meeting between the Nailers and Royals this season, as well as the eighth battle between the two clubs at Santander Arena. On Friday night, Wheeling earned its fifth victory of the season series, as well as its fourth in the last eight clashes, thanks to a 5-1 triumph at WesBanco Arena. However, Reading has had the upper hand, winning nine times, which is one short of the all-time record between the two teams, set by the Royals during the 2010-11 campaign. Reading has won four of seven games at home, including a 5-4 comeback win on March 7th.
