A Royal Pain
The Wheeling Nailers and Fort Wayne Komets enter Saturday night's contest, with both teams coming off of a setback at the hands of the Reading Royals. On Wednesday, the Nailers began the week in Reading, where they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Matt Grassi and Zack Torquato, before the Royals rallied to tie the game, and ultimately won 3-2 in a shootout. On Friday, the Komets took their turn, playing host to Reading at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Royals doubled up Fort Wayne, 4-2, thanks to a pair of goals by defenseman Aaron Gens. Both teams had three-game winning streaks halted.
Fun in the Fort
Saturday night marks the Nailers' second visit to Fort Wayne this season, and third all-time, as they look for their fourth straight win overall against the Komets. Last season, Wheeling won a pair of one-goal decisions, coming out on top 3-2 at home and 1-0 on the road. This season, the two sides collided on November 8th, when the Nailers erased two separate one-goal deficits, before rattling off five straight tallies for a commanding 6-2 victory. Carter Rowney netted his first career hat trick for Wheeling, which included two markers in 15 seconds.
Torquato to the Top
With one goal and one assist on Wednesday in Reading, Zack Torquato has propelled himself to the top of the Nailers' stat sheet, as he currently leads the way with nine assist and 12 points in 13 games. After injuries kept him out of the lineup for 27 of 72 games last season, Torquato finished the campaign strong, picking up at least one point in five straight games. That success has continued into 2013-14, as Zack has points in seven of 13 games, including three in a row, for an overall string of at least one point in 12 of his last 18 games.
Corbeil was with the "C"omets
On Friday, the Nailers gained the second half of their goaltending tandem, as the Utica Comets re-assigned Mathieu Corbeil to Wheeling from the CHL's St. Charles Chill. Although he is still considered a rookie, this is Corbeil's second professional season, as he posted a 10-9-1 record in 21 games with the CHL's Missouri Mavericks in 2012-13. Prior to turning pro, Mathieu spent parts of four seasons in the QMJHL, which included back-to-back President Cups and a Memorial Cup with the Saint John Sea Dogs. Corbeil's goaltending partner, Mike Condon, has allowed two goals or fewer in four straight starts.
Small Players with Large Point Totals
Forwards Mickey Lang and Brandon Marino are tied with forward Phil Mangan as the shortest players on the Komets, checking in at 5-foot-9. However, their point totals have been anything but tiny. Lang leads Fort Wayne with eight goals and 16 points in 12 games, while Marino has the crown for assists, dishing out 11 in 12 games. Chris Auger (5'10") and Scott Fleming (5'11") are also listed under the 6-foot mark, but have totaled 7-0-7 and 4-7-11 totals respectively. The Komets have a significantly taller blueline, led by 6-foot-7 Simon Danis-Pepin and 6-foot-6 Nick Tuzzolino.
