Rough Finish in Reading

The Wheeling Nailers flew out of the gates on Friday night, opening up a 2-0 lead during the middle stages of the first period against the Reading Royals. However, for just the third time this season and second against the Royals, Wheeling's two-goal lead failed to result in a victory (19-2-1), as Reading took 3-2 and 4-3 leads, before Josh Brittain's goal with 1:56 remaining, gave the home team a 5-4 win at Santander Arena. Carter Rowney, Max MacKay, Tom Kuhnhackl, and Dustin Stevenson found the back of the net for the Nailers, who have produced 23 goals in their last five games.

Jackals Lended a Helping Hand

The Elmira Jackals gave the Nailers some help in the Eastern Conference Standings, as they held off the Evansville IceMen, 3-2 on Friday night at First Arena. Elmira built a 3-0 lead on goals by Rob Bellamy, Jean Bourbeau, and Jordan Pietrus, before the IceMen rallied back to cut their deficit to one. Goaltender Neil Conway helped to keep the Evansville comeback at bay, as he turned away 32 of the 34 shots he faced, earning his eighth win of the season. The Jackals have followed up a four-game losing streak by earning points in each of their last three games (2-0-1), closing their gap to within 12 points of the final playoff spot with 16 games remaining.

Captain Coming Alive Offensively

Wheeling captain Dustin Stevenson entered play last weekend with 12 points (all assists) in his first 39 games with the Nailers. Since then, Stevenson has gone on a tear, tallying one goal and one assist in three of his last four games, with the most recent two goals coming during the third period. This is the second time in Dustin's career that he has lit the lamp three times in a four-game stretch, as he accomplished that feat in January, 2011 with the South Carolina Stingrays, as part of a four-game point streak. The fourth year blueliner had one other multiple-point game this season, when he dished out three assists, while recording a +5 rating on November 8th in Fort Wayne.

Extended Stay in the Northeast

Over the course of the past month, the Jackals have had very little traveling to do, as they are in the midst of a stretch in which 13 of 16 games are played at First Arena. With ten of the 16 games in the books, the run has been very up-and-down for Elmira, who started 2-1-1, then proceeded to lose five straight (0-4-1), before rebounding with wins in its most recent two contests. The road portion of the past month hasn't seen the Jackals leave the Atlantic Division, as they visited Wheeling on February 15th, Reading on February 26th, and they will travel to Reading again on March 15th. Elmira has just five wins against the Atlantic Division, while the Nailers have 14 and the Royals have 19.

The End of the Road to Elmira

Saturday night's game marks the 14th of 15 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals this season, as well as Wheeling's eighth and final visit of the campaign to First Arena. The Nailers have dominated the season series, winning five times in each building, while going 10-2-1 overall against Elmira. Four of the ten victories have come since February 15th, when Wheeling edged the Jackals 2-1 in a shootout at WesBanco Arena. Since then, the two sides have clashed four times in Elmira, with the Nailers coming out on top in three. Zack Torquato's 13 points and Cody Sylvester's seven goals are the most in the season series.
