The Great Walls of Wheeling

In the first two games of the season series between Wheeling and Elmira, the story has been the performances of the Nailers' two rookie goaltenders, Mike Condon and Eric Hartzell. In the season opener on October 18th, Condon turned aside 40 of 42 shots, including 20 saves in the third period alone, as the Nailers edged the Jackals, 3-2. On Thursday night, it was Eric Hartzell's turn, as he earned his first professional win and shutout, after denying all 37 Elmira attempts in a 1-0 win for Wheeling. Hartzell and Condon have now allowed two goals or fewer in five straight starts.

Gill Grabs a Goal

In addition to Hartzell's first win and shutout, another member of the Nailers achieved a milestone on Thursday night, as Sahir Gill netted his first professional goal at the 13:37 mark of the second period. Gill's tally turned out to be the lone marker in the contest, creating the difference in Wheeling's 1-0 triumph over the Jackals. After sitting out the first three games of the season, Sahir has made the most of his opportunities, as he has at least one point in three of the five games he has played in this season, and is ranked tied for fifth in team scoring.

Another Addition from the A

Defenseman Harrison Ruopp made his professional debut for the Nailers on Thursday night, skating away with two shots on goal and a +1 rating. On Friday, Wheeling will add another new face from the Penguins organization, as forward Anton Zlobin will play in his second professional game, after debuting with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday. Zlobin was drafted by Pittsburgh in the sixth round (173rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, and posted 212 points in 186 games in the QMJHL.

Thanks to a 3-for-3 effort on Thursday, the Nailers boast the sixth best penalty kill in the ECHL, entering Friday's clash with a 90.0% success rate. Interestingly enough, the penalty kill has been identical at home and on the road for Wheeling this year, as the team is 18-for-20 in each scenario, for a 36-for-40 mark overall. Thursday's stats dropped Elmira's power play to 16th in the league, while its penalty kill (20th) and Wheeling's power play (22nd) maintained the same rankings, as the Nailers were 0-for-1.

Their Barn is Tough

In the seven years since the Jackals joined the ECHL, they have made it a point to transform First Arena into a house of horrors for opposing teams. Despite winning 16 of the 29 head-to-head meetings at WesBanco Arena, Wheeling has faced significant struggles when playing in Elmira, having defeated the Jackals just eight times in 30 road contests. The Nailers' best season in New York came in 2010-11, when they split four games. Since then, Wheeling is 2-6-3 at First Arena, with eight chances to reverse that trend in 2013-14.
