Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced six transactions, which all take place immediately. Wheeling has received goaltender Mike Condon and defenseman Drew Schiestel from the Hamilton Bulldogs, along with forward Cody Sylvester and defensemen Peter Merth and Nick D'Agostino from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Additionally, the Utica Comets have recalled goaltender Mathieu Corbeil.

Condon, 23, returns to the Nailers after nearly one month in the American Hockey League with the Hamilton Bulldogs. While with the Bulldogs, Mike appeared in three games, picking up one win and one loss, after taking over in relief during his first outing. The victory came in his most recent start, when he made 28 saves in a 4-3 shootout win over Utica on December 28th. Prior to his recall, the Holliston, MA native had excellent success with the Nailers, going 10-4-4, with a 2.33 goals against average, and a .925 save percentage. In 30 career regular season games as a pro, Condon is 17-5-4.

Schiestel, 24, is currently in the midst of his fifth season of professional hockey and first in the Montreal/Hamilton organization, after spending four seasons under contract with the Buffalo Sabres. Thus far this season, Drew has appeared in 21 games with the Bulldogs, accumulating six goals and 16 penalty minutes. The former second round draft pick of the Sabres has suited up in 215 games over the course of his pro career, totaling nine goals, 52 assists, 61 points, 103 penalty minutes, and a +19 rating. This will be Schiestel's first stint as a Nailer.

Sylvester, 21, returns to Wheeling, where he began the 2013-14 campaign, after netting a pair of goals in 17 games with the Penguins. Prior to his recall, Cody appeared in 12 games with the Nailers, racking up five goals and six points. The Kelowna, BC native had his best performance on November 2nd, when his two goals helped rally Wheeling past Greenville, 5-3. This is Sylvester's first pro season, after spending each of the last five with the WHL's Calgary Hitmen.

Merth, 26, will be making his season debut with the Nailers, but is no stranger to Wheeling, having spent parts of the last three seasons with the club. In 2012-13, Peter was named team captain, and proceeded to have a career year, tallying 17 points in 48 games. The New Westminster, BC native ranks 16th all-time in games played, having put on the Wheeling uniform in 167 regular season contests. Merth has been limited to two games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, after appearing in eight playoff games last spring.

D'Agostino, 23, is currently in the midst of his rookie campaign, after a four-year career at Cornell University. While with the Big Red, Nick recorded 25 goals, 47 assists, and 72 points in 132 games. This season, the Bolton, ON native has amassed one goal, six assists, and seven points in 25 tilts with the Penguins. D'Agostino has yet to make his debut with the Nailers.

Corbeil, 22, earns his second recall to Utica, following a two-game stint with the Nailers, which saw him go 1-0-1, as he improved his season record to 3-1-1 in six contests. Mathieu played both of his most recent games against the Elmira Jackals, stopping 34 of 36 shots for a 3-2 overtime win on January 3rd, before a 33-save effort on January 4th in a 4-3 overtme loss. Although the Montreal, QC still qualifies as a rookie, he is in the midst of his second professional season, after going 10-9-1 with the CHL's Missouri Mavericks in 2012-13.

The Nailers have also announced that defensemen Gentry Zollars has been release by the team.

The Wheeling Nailers will begin a stretch of four games in five days on Wednesday night in Reading against the Royals. They will then return home to face the Cincinnati Cyclones on Thursday at 7:00.
