January 8, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Las Vegas Wranglers defeated the Utah Grizzlies 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday evening at Maverik Center, despite the Grizzlies outshooting them 45-19.
Utah collects the standings point to improve to 4-1-1-1 in their last seven games.
"We put up 45 shots tonight, we're pretty disappointed to not come out with the win," said Michael Pelech who had one goal and one assist to extend his scoring streak to six-straight games in the contest.
The Grizzlies scored 1:30 into the first period to take a 1-0 lead as D.J. Jelitto and Michael Pelech found Mathieu Aubin on the side of the net for his sixth goal of the year. The Wranglers countered 2:54 later up ice to tie the contest.
"Me, Aubin and D.J. are really clicking right now and we're feeling pretty confident," said Pelech. "D.J. is really easy to play with, he's a big body, cycles the puck well; we don't try to do anything fancy out there, we just get the pucks deep and get them to the net."
Utah took a 2-1 lead with 7:21 left in the second as Grizzlies defensemen Brendan Jamison and Martin Lee found Michael Pelech on a breakaway for his sixth goal of the year. The assist was Jamison's first pro point. Las Vegas tied the game 4:27 into the third period.
"We played pretty solid all game," said Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham. "We need to find a way to pull these games out. We'll go back to the drawing board here and come up with a W tomorrow.
Utah outshot the Wranglers 15-5 in the first period, 16-7 in the second and 10-5 in the third as they recorded 10 of the final 11 shots to end the game and send it to a shootout.
Las Vegas won the shootout 3-2 in round six on a sudden-death ending score from Jeff May. Las Vegas goaltender Mitch O'Keefe stopped 43 of 45 shots through overtime.
Brent Gwidt and Jamie MacQueen tied Utah season-highs with nine shots on goal in the game. Grizzlies goaltender Aaron Dell stopped 16 of 18 shots through regulation to drop to 6-2-0-1.
