Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans play a 5 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at the Winston-Salem Dash. RHP Erich Uelmen (3-2, 4.62 ERA) starts for the Birds in the opener against Winston-Salem RHP Lincoln Henzman (0-1, 3.65 ERA). The finale pits RHP Tyson Miller (8-8, 3.78 ERA) against Dash RHP Blake Hickman (2-3, 7.42 ERA). Coverage begins at 4:45 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, TuneIn and the MiLB First Pitch app.
PELICANS TAKE SERIES OPENER 6-4
Yeiler Peguero registered three hits and matched a career-high with three RBIs in Tuesday's 6-4 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash. Winston-Salem scored in their opening at-bats, and the margin remained 1-0 until the fifth inning. D.J. Wilson's RBI ground out and Aramis Ademan's RBI single put the Birds ahead at 2-1. After the Dash tied the score in the bottom of the fifth inning, Myrtle Beach went in front again in the sixth on Peguero's two-run base hit. However, Winston-Salem responded with two in the sixth to equalize the score again. The game went into extra innings, and the Pelicans plated two in the eighth on an error and Peguero RBI single to eventually win 6-4. The finale of the doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather.
STARTING SETTLEMENTS DOWN
Over the last 17 games, Myrtle Beach starting pitchers have ceded three earned runs or less 16 times. During that span, the club's starters have pitched a total of 83.1 innings, yielding 31 earned runs on 63 hits for a 3.35 ERA. The Birds' bullpen has started to heat up recently as well; After posting a 6.38 ERA due to 13 runs, all earned, on 27 hits in 18.1 frames in the seven games from August 2-11, Pelicans relievers have allowed just seven runs, five earned, on 31 hits in 38.1 innings (1.17 ERA) over the last nine contests.
RUINING CHANCES TO HANG OUT
The Pelicans will play their 13th doubleheader of the year on Wednesday at Winston-Salem. The Birds are just 8-14 (.364) in twin bill contests this season, which equals the Dash's .364 winning percentage in such contests for the worst in the Carolina League. The 13 doubleheaders Myrtle Beach will have recorded by the end of Wednesday are the club's most in a single campaign in their recorded history, which dates back through the 2005 season.
BUT MAYBE TOMORROW WILL BE BETTER
During the month of August, the Birds are batting just .211/.281/.277 to post a .558 OPS, far below their league-worst mark on the season of .634. Over the first 18 games of August, Myrtle Beach has mustered just 22 extra-base hits. The Pelicans are also a woeful 25-for-130 (.192) during the month with runners in scoring position, plating a total of 46 runs (2.6 per game) in August.
STUCK ON NINE VICTORY POINTS
Myrtle Beach won Tuesday, but unfortunately for the Birds, Buies Creek also earned a victory over Carolina. That dropped the Pelicans' elimination number to just two, meaning the club could be eliminated from the postseason for the first time since 2010 as early as today with two losses or a defeat and an Astros victory over Carolina. Myrtle Beach is also just one defeat away from sealing the club's first non-winning season since the Birds went 58-82 (.414) during the 2010 campaign.
ALL SCRIPTED
Over the Pelicans' last 26 contests, 23 have been decided by three runs or less, including a remarkable 18 by just one tally. In the 100 battles prior to this run, the Birds had played in just 20 one-run games. On the season, Myrtle Beach has played 82 games decided by no more than three runs, the second-highest total in the Carolina League. The Pelicans are 42-40 (.512) in those engagements. Nine of Myrtle Beach's last 12 contests have been decided by precisely one score, including six of their last eight games.
PIRATE MUSIC
Tyson Miller, who starts Wednesday's doubleheader finale at Winston-Salem, has thrived against everyone in the Carolina League save for Down East, who he has a 5.81 ERA in six starts against (20 ER in 31.0 IP). Against all other opponents, Miller has posted a 2.97 ERA (26 ER in 78.2 IP. On the season, the La Quinta, Calif., native leads the Carolina League in WHIP (1.14) and ranks third in batting average against (.227), sixth in FIP (3.60) and eighth in ERA (3.78). Opponents have struck out in 24.0 percent of plate appearances against Miller, the third-best mark in the league.
PELICAN POINTS
Heading into play on Wednesday, the Birds have won seven of their last 11 games... With only 51 homers this year, the Pelicans are on pace for just 57 long balls. That could emerge as the lowest in club history (64 home runs, 2013)... Infielder Andruw Monasterio was traded on Tuesday for major league infielder Daniel Murphy of Washington... Garrett Kelly earned the win on Tuesday. The right-hander was good for two shutout innings with a strikeout.
