Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - The Wilmington Blue Rocks (60-68 / 29-29) were swept by the Down East Wood Ducks (21-38) Wednesday night, dropping the resumption of a suspended game by the score of 5-0 before suffering a tough 3-2 loss in the series finale at Frawley Stadium. The bullpen only allowed one run in five-plus innings in the resumed contest while Nate Esposito reached base three times in the final game. The Blue Rocks have now lost 10 straight games and Wilmington's elimination number is seven.

The Blue Rocks and Wood Ducks had to resume their suspended game Tuesday night on Wednesday. The contest picked up in the top of the fourth inning with a runner at first, one out and Wilmington down, 4-0. The Wood Ducks staked their lead on Tuesday with a four-run fourth inning. They sent eight men to the plate and scored on an RBI single from Yanio Perez, a run-scoring double by Eric Jenkins before Leody Taveras capped the scoring with a two-run single to put the Rocks behind.

Down East struck for another run in the top of the fifth inning when Chuck Leblanc reached base on a one-out double and Yanio Perez singled down the right field line to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

The Blue Rocks' bullpen combined to allow just one run over the final 5.2 innings of the ball game as Carter Hope tossed 3.2 innings and allowed one run, allowed three hits and struck out three batters. Bryan Brickhouse tossed the final two innings in scoreless fashion and racked up three strikeouts and retired all six batters faced.

The second game of the doubleheader got off to a much better start for Wilmington as the offense jumped to an early lead in the bottom of the first. With Gabriel Cancel on first, Emmanuel Rivera singled down the left field line to put runners on the corners with two outs. Travis Jones hit a bloop single into left to score Cancel and give the Blue Rocks the 1-0 lead.

Down East took the lead in the top of the fourth. Anderson Tejeda hit a leadoff triple and later scored off a Yanio Perez sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, Alex Kowalczyk hit a deep fly ball that just snuck over the fence in right for a two-run homerun to put the Wood Ducks ahead 3-1. The Blue Rocks trimmed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. After a Nathan Esposito walk, Jackson Lueck smacked a double deep into right that allowed Esposito to score and make it a 3-2 ballgame. The Blue Rocks put the tying-run on base in the fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to even the score.

The Blue Rocks will be back in action on Friday, August 24 when they welcome in the Salem Red Sox for a three-game series on the Riverfront. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with RHP Ofreidy Gomez (4-10, 3.76 ERA) starts for the Blue Rocks. Fans can listen to the game as Matt Janus and Cory Nidoh have the call on 89.7 WGLS-FM.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Emmanuel Rivera had his season-high 12-game on-base streak come to an end in game one on Wednesday night. Rivera reached base safely in 12 straight games heading into Wednesday's action. Despite the streak being snapped in the resumption of the suspended game, Rivera got right back on track with two hits in two at-bats in game two.

The 10-game skid marks the first time the Blue Rocks have dropped 10 games or more consecutively since April 21 through May 2, 2016. That was part of a 12-game losing streak Wilmington endured. Prior to their current losing streak, the previous watermark on the season for the Blue Rocks was just a four-game losing streak.
