Des Moines, IA - Wil Myers belted the game-winning two-run home run in the ninth inning as Omaha outlasted Iowa, 9-7, Monday night in the first of three meetings at Principal Park. The Storm Chasers improved to 40-25 and lengthened their lead to 11 games over the Cubs in the American Conference North Division. [X]
Jeff Beliveau tossed a scoreless eighth inning in relief for Iowa and stayed on for the ninth but could not record an out before departing. Kurt Mertins opened the decisive frame with a single and scored when Myers blasted his ninth home run with Omaha, and 22nd of the season, over the wall in right field to snap a 7-7 tie. Salvador Perez followed with a single, his third hit of the night, to chase Beliveau from the mound. The left-hander was replaced by Rafael Dolis, who set down the next three hitters to end the frame.
Everett Teaford, making his second appearance on a rehab assignment from the major leagues, finished his three-inning relief stint with a scoreless bottom of the ninth to preserve Omaha's sixth consecutive victory. The Storm Chasers have totaled 52 runs on 79 hits during their winning streak.
Perez singled in a run and Tony Abreu added a scoring fly ball as the Chasers jumped on Iowa starter Jay Jackson for two runs in the first before adding another pair in the second on a Chris Getz two-out, two-run double.
Anthony Rizzo's solo home run along with a run-scoring single by Blake Lalli in the home second halved the lead and an RBI hit from Josh Vitters with two outs in the third sliced the Omaha advantage to 4-3.
Perez came through again in the fourth with a bases loaded double to drive in two to stretch the visitors lead back to three before David Lough followed with a base hit that plated Getz and chased Jackson from the hill after he had allowed 11 hits and walked three over 3 2/3 innings.
The hosts fashioned their second comeback from a four-run deficit in the fifth when Rizzo belted a three-run homer, his 22nd of the campaign, to once again slice the margin to one. Storm Chasers starter Will Smith was lifted with two runners on and one out in the sixth and replaced by Brandon Sisk, who induced Dave Sappelt to bounce into an inning-ending double play. Smith was tagged for six runs, five earned, on eight hits and a pair of free passes while striking out six in his first turn at the Triple-A level since May 17.
Teaford took over in the seventh and yielded a bases loaded single to Luis Valbuena that tied the game at seven but was able to limit the damage by getting Ty Wright to ground into a double play that ended the inning.
