Falu And Godfrey Picked As Best Of The Best
Published on June 11, 2012 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - In a week of great performances, Irving Falu of the Omaha Storm Chasers and Graham Godfrey of the Sacramento River Cats were elite as the Pacific Coast League announced them today as the Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 4th through 10th.
Falu collected hits in all six games he played in last week, including two home runs and two doubles as he led the Storm Chasers to a 5-1 record during that period. The middle infielder hit .526 and was second in the PCL with 9 RBIs, including four on Friday in Omaha's 11-5 win vs Round Rock. Falu also added five runs, two walks, and a stolen base to his 10 hits on the week.
Born in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico, Falu was drafted by the Royals in the 21st round of the 2003 draft out of Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. In 2011, Falu hit .301 for Omaha, stealing 11 bases and scoring 50 runs for the PCL champions. He made his MLB debut at shortstop on May 6th, 2012, and hit a triple in his first at-bat. This season Falu is batting .350 with 3 home runs in 29 games for the Storm Chasers, who lead the American Northern division.
Godfrey picks up his second Player of the Week award of the season after another two strong wins last week. On June 5th in Tacoma, the right-hander threw six innings of shutout ball while striking out nine Rainiers, and then followed up on Sunday in hitter-friendly Colorado Springs with an eight-inning start in which he allowed just a single run. His 14 innings led the league while his 11 strikeouts were good for third, accompanied by a sparkling 0.64 ERA and 0.57 WHIP.
Godfrey, from Houston, Texas, was drafted by Toronto in the 34th round in 2006 out of the College of Charleston in South Carolina. After being traded to Oakland in a deal for Marco Scutaro, Godfrey progressed quickly through the system. In 2011, he made 18 starts for Sacramento, going 14-3 with a 2.68 ERA while notching 89 strikeouts, earning his MLB debut on June 11th. Godfrey has gone 5-0 in 8 starts with the River Cats this season, putting up a remarkable 1.05 ERA for Sacramento between stints with the Major League club.
