Nick Green's line drive with two out in the bottom of the ninth sailed over the head of left fielder Jake Goebbert, allowing two runs to score and giving the New Orleans Zephyrs a come-from-behind, 4-3 win over the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Monday night at Zephyr Field.
It was the second time in three days the Zephyrs rallied in the ninth inning to beat RedHawks closer Jose Valdez, who had previously been a perfect 13-for-13 in save chances.
Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth, the Zephyrs' rally started with a one-out double off the right field wall by Bryan Petersen. After Gil Velazquez flied out, Scott Cousins legged out an infield single and stole second base.
The RedHawks elected to intentionally walk Mike Cervenak to load the bases, but Green responded by lacing a line drive over Goebbert's head for the game-winner.
Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the third after a leadoff double down the right-field line by Carlos Corporan. J.B. Shuck beat out an infield single and with one out, Brandon Barnes hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field, scoring Corporan.
In the top of the fifth, Angel Sanchez led off with a solo blast over the left field wall to increase the Oklahoma City lead to two runs.
The Zephyrs' strung a couple of hits together in the sixth inning, tying the ballgame. Cousins singled to right with one out, followed by an RBI double from Cervenak down the right field line. Green followed suit and laced an RBI single to right-center, scoring Cervenak.
Tom Koehler threw seven innings, allowing two runs and four hits, while fanning six. Rob Delaney (3-1) tabbed the win in relief giving up just one hit and striking out three to retire the eighth inning.
Valdez (0-3) took the loss for the RedHawks with a blown save in his 15th save opportunity.
Koehler, Cousins, and Green led the Z's offense with two hits apiece, while Petersen and Cervenak added one.
The Zephyrs and RedHawks resume the series on Tuesday at 7pm. Righty J.D. Martin will take the mound for New Orleans, and right-hander Paul Clemens will get the start for Oklahoma City.
