Tacoma Rainiers News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The Tacoma Rainiers were held to seven hits and fell to Salt Lake 10-4 in the club's series opener against the Bees at Spring Mobile Ballpark on Monday night.
The loss extends the Rainiers losing skid to a season-high eight games, and is the team's 12th defeat over their last 13 contests.
Early errors helped put the Rainiers in a quick 4-0 hole over the game's first 4.0 innings. With the Rainiers already trailing 1-0, Bees outfielder Doug Deeds scored from third on a missed catch error committed by first baseman Luis Jimenez in the third.
In the fourth, Vinnie Catricala misfielded a ground ball at third base, prolonging an inning that eventually saw Salt Lake notch two more runs.
Catricala led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run - his third this season - to bring Tacoma within three runs, but Deeds' two-run homer in the sixth started a four-run inning for the Bees to put the game further out of reach for the Rainiers.
Outfielder Carlos Peguero turned in the Rainiers only multi-hit effort after going 2-for-4, including a one-run double in the ninth inning that scored Adam Moore.
Starter Jarrett Grube (0-3) was dealt the loss after surrendering four runs - one earned - on six hits and striking out six over 5.0 innings.
Relievers Forrest Snow (1.0) and Scott Patterson (0.1) combined to give up six runs - five earned - through 1.1 innings over sixth and seventh. Left-hander Oliver Perez turned in a scoreless effort and fanned two over 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.
The Rainiers (24-40) return to action at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow, June 11, to play the second game of the club's three-game series at Salt Lake (35-30). Right-hander Brian Sweeney (1-1, 3.82) is scheduled to start for Tacoma against left-hander Greg Smith (2-3, 3.19) for the Bees.
