Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, and WGIR 610 AM/Rock 101 FM are pleased to announce the return of the mullet to Manchester by popular demand with "Mullet Night: Redneck Edition" when the Monarchs host the Hershey Bears at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2008.
Mullet Night and the celebration of hockey hair sprung onto the scene in 2003 when the Monarchs honored the "business in the front, party in the back" hairstyle that was made popular by both professional athletes and entertainers. Over three years, the Monarchs celebrated the noted coiffe and inducted Barry Melrose, a former coach of the Kings and current ESPN personality, and the Hanson Brothers, immortalized as members of the Charlestown Chiefs in the classic hockey movie, "Slap Shot", into the Mullet Hall of Fame. In 2005, the two-time winner of the Grand Mullet of the Night, Devin Tebow, found his spot in the Hall of Fame along side not only Melrose and the famous trio of brothers, but also Patrick Swayze, Billy Ray Cyrus and Randy Johnson. Tebow became the first native of New Hampshire to join the prestigious ranks of hockey's greatest hairstyle.
In recognition of the history of the mullet through the years, the Monarchs are honoring the Redneck next month for keeping hockey hair alive for all these years. It's the Redneck that saved the mullet from impending doom, single-handedly kept their long locks from being wiped off the face of the Earth forever.
"Whether they're hunting, fishing, watching wrestling or heading off to the rodeo, the Redneck has long been identified by their '10-90' hairdo," said Monarchs President Jeff Eisenberg. "It is the Redneck that has kept the love affair with the mullet alive and it is to these people that we pay tribute to on March 7."
"Mullet Night: Redneck Edition" will be filled with Redneck activities, music, on-ice entertainment as well as the distribution of 3,500 mullet trucker hats with hair flowing freely like no one has ever seen before in the arena, courtesy of Sanel Auto Parts. Not only that, fans can leave their dentures at home as the Monarchs are also giving away 3,500 sets of Redneck teeth! So dust off your old mullet wigs, throw on your best hunting gear and join the Monarchs for another unforgettable Mullet Night.
Tickets for "Mullet Night: Redneck Edition" are on sale now and may be purchased at the Verizon Wireless Arena box office, by calling the Monarchs at (603) 626-7825 or by visiting www.manchestermonarchs.com.
Hockey fans across all of North America have shared in the celebration of the Mullet with major media outlets including CNN, CNN Headline News, ESPN's SportsCenter, ESPN's NHL2Night and Fox Sports who have provided coverage of the celebrated hair style.
