Cleveland Monsters News Release

It will be a flashback to the fashion of the 1970's when the first 5,000 fans in attendance at the Monsters vs. Grand Rapids Griffins game on Saturday, March 8th at 7:30 p.m. receive Monsters tie-dyed t-shirts, courtesy of Kaiser Permanente and ESPN 850 WKNR. On the ice, the players will go retro wearing their own tie-dyed jerseys, which will be auctioned to benefit Veggie U and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The theme of the night "Peace, Love and Hockey" is shown on the back of each t-shirt and jersey.

Fans will have a chance to bid on the one-of-a-kind game-worn jerseys with 100 percent of the net proceeds raised to go to Veggie U and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The Veggie U curriculum gives fourth and fifth grade students hands-on experience that shows the importance of making smart food choices as part of living an active and healthy life. Veggie U is committed to fostering a synergy between educational, nutritional, and agricultural goals to combat the rising epidemic of childhood obesity.

There will be two ways to participate in the auction for the tie-dyed jerseys, online and in-arena. Fans can get a head start on bidding when only three of the player jerseys - T.J. Hensick, Mitch Love and Tyler Weiman - are put up for auction on Wednesday, March 5th at noon on LakeErieMonsters.com. The three jerseys will continue to be open to online bidders in addition to in-arena bidders when the entire Monsters team of player jerseys goes up for auction at the game on Saturday, March 8th. Bidding will conclude both online and in-arena at 9:45 p.m.

"This is a fun and unique jersey and by making it available to our fans through the auction, we are raising money to support a quality program like Veggie U," said Monsters COO Randy Domain. "Educating our children on healthy food choices is becoming an increasingly important lifestyle lesson."

"The Veggie U program is proud of the progress we have made in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and we are thrilled to have the Monsters and Kaiser Permanente on board with our efforts, " Terri Smith, director Veggie U.

"Poor nutrition and lack of physical activity are the two major causes of childhood obesity. Through Kaiser Permanente's healthy eating/active living (HEAL) efforts, we are reaching out to educate children about making healthier choices. The Veggie U program, is a perfect fit with our focus on HEAL and creating healthier communities," said Carolyn Hightower, Vice President of Health Plan Administration and Strategy for Kaiser Permanente's Ohio region (KPO). Kaiser Permanente is the presenting partner of the Lake Erie Monsters.

"It is essential for youth in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to make healthy eating decisions," said Dr. Eugene Sanders, CEO of Cleveland Schools. "With the help of the Lake Erie Monsters and Kaiser Permanente, Veggie U will continue to give our students the map to success for these choices," added Sanders.

Game tickets to see the Monsters play live at Quicken Loans Arena, start at just $10 and are available at the Quicken Loans Arena box office, by visiting LakeErieMonsters.com, or by calling (216) 420-0000.
