Carolina Mudcats News Release
SALEM, VA - Jacob Schrader was 2-for-2 with a RBI, Dustin Peterson scored twice and Mauricio Cabrera held the Red Sox to an unearned run over three innings as the Mudcats won the finale of their five game series in Salem 3-1 on Monday night at LewisGale Field.
Blair Walters started the game and held the Red Sox (16-16) scoreless over four innings pitched. Cabrera followed by pitching the fifth, sixth and seventh and earned his second win of the season. Cabrera (2-0, 1.54) allowed an unearned run in the fifth, but kept the Red Sox scoreless the rest of the way. He struck out four, walked one and gave up two hits in the victory.
The Mudcats (19-12) scored once in the fourth, once more in the sixth and one last run in the ninth while squeaking by with the victory. They were just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded five men on base in the win.
Kevin McAvoy suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs over six innings. McAvoy gave up seven hits and struck out six. Joe Gunkel pitched the final three innings and kept the Mudcats without a run while allowing just two hits.
Schrader drove in the first run of the game with a single to left in the fourth. It was his second hit of the game and it scored Peterson who had singled to start the inning. Peterson also stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error in the fourth before scoring.
The Mudcats led 1-0 through the fourth, but two Salem hits and a throwing error in the fifth by Cabrera helped the Red Sox tie it up at 1-1. Cabrera entered the game in the fifth and gave up consecutive two-out singles to Jose Vinicio and Tzu-Wei Lin. Lin's hit pushed Vinicio to third and he would score moments later when Cabrera missed wide with a pickoff throw to first. Lin advanced from first to third on the throw and Vinicio scored to tie the game.
Carolina came right back in the sixth with another run from Peterson to take the lead back at 2-1. Peterson led off the sixth with a single to left, moved to second on a balk, went to third on a ground out and scored on sacrifice fly to left. Sean Godfrey drove him in after taking over as the designated hitter for Schrader after the fourth. Schrader was called out at home while trying to score on two-out double from Jose Briceno in the fourth. He apparently argued the call and was ejected after being tagged out to end the inning.
Britt Robertshaw, despite walking two, pitched a scoreless eighth with three strikeouts and held things for Andy Otero who then closed the game. Otero (S, 3) retired the side in order in the ninth and struck out two.
The victory was Carolina's third in the five game series and third in their eight game road trip. Three more games remain on the trip and all three will be played in Myrtle Beach when the Mudcats play the Pelicans for the first time. Carolina's three game series in Myrtle Beach begins on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Tyler Brosius (2-1, 3.33) starting for the Mudcats and RHP Duane Underwood (3-0, 1.29) going for the Pelicans. The Mudcats currently sit a half game behind the Pelicans in the Southern Division standings.
