Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (May 11, 2015) - The Winston-Salem Dash could not hold onto a seventh-inning lead and fell 8-5 in a series-deciding loss to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in front of 6,482 at BB&T Ballpark on Monday afternoon.
With the Dash (14-18) in front 4-3 in the seventh, Winston-Salem reliever Brian Clark (1-1) walked the first three batters of the frame before giving way to Jose Brito. Carlos Penalver hit a sacrifice fly to center to knot the score, and Mark Zagunis singled home another run to give the Pelicans (20-12) a 6-4 advantage.
Two batters later, Billy McKinney, who went 9-for-18 with seven RBIs in the series, knocked home Daniel Lockhart to make it 6-4. All three runs were charged to Clark, who didn't allow a hit, but walked three against two hits in one-plus inning of work.
The Dash did get a run back in the home half of the seventh on a double play, but Myrtle Beach reliever Zach Cates earned his second save with two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.
Winston-Salem had taken the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Jacobs, who had three hits and two RBIs, led off the frame with a single, and Nick Basto promptly doubled him to third. Omar Narvaez's two-run single gave the Dash a 4-3 lead and knocked Pelicans starter Daury Torrez from the game.
James Pugliese (2-0) relieved Torrez and picked up the win, surrendering the aforementioned seventh-inning run on two hits with a walk in two frames.
Jacobs had an RBI double in the first inning to initially put the Dash up 1-0.
In the top of the third, Daniel Lockhart led off with his first home run since August 13, 2012, to put Myrtle Beach on the board. An error by Winston starter Jake Cose, who gave up three runs (two earned) in 5.0 innings, put Penalver aboard, and a Zagunis double set up the Birds with two runners in scoring position. Darvill's RBI groundout and McKinney's sacrifice fly propelled the Pelicans a 3-1 advantage.
After Keon Barnum doubled with two outs in the bottom half of the third, Jacobs singled down the left field line to provide Winston-Salem's answer and cut the lead to 3-2.
The Dash begin a three-game series Tuesday at Salem. Winston sends Matt Heidenreich (5-0, 1.21 ERA) to the mound against the Red Sox's Daniel McGrath (1-1, 1.88 ERA). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m., with pregame coverage starting at 6:50 p.m. on http://wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn app.
Following their three-game series at Salem, the Dash will host the Red Sox in a three-game weekend series, which begins with a postgame Fireworks show Friday night. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
