Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (MAY 11, 2015) - A sea-saw battle against the Winston-Salem Dash went the Birds' way on Monday as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, wrapped up a series victory with an 8-5 win at BB&T Ballpark. Billy McKinney, who was announced as the Carolina League Player of the Week earlier in the afternoon, drove in three runs, helping Myrtle Beach win three out of five games in the series.

Despite being out-hit by the Dash, Myrtle Beach (20-12) jumped ahead with three runs in the third. Daniel Lockhart spurred the offense with a lead-off home run, his first of the year, and first since August, 2012, to tie the game at 1-1. Wes Darvill brought in the go-ahead tally with an RBI ground out before McKinney's sacrifice fly to center put the Pelicans ahead 3-1.

Beginning to rally, the Dash (14-18) knocked Pelicans starting pitcher Daury Torrez out of the game in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Chris Jacobs, who put Winston-Salem on the board with an RBI double in the first inning while adding a run-scoring single in the third, clubbed another single to lead off the sixth. A double by left fielder Nick Basto put two men in scoring position, and catcher Omar Narvaez gave the Dash a 4-3 lead with a two-run single to left.

Right-handed reliever James Pugliese came on to end the threat in the sixth, stranding two runners.

The Pelicans responded in the seventh, erupting for three more runs. Three consecutive walks issued by Dash reliever Brian Clark loaded the bases to start the frame, and Carlos Penalver tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Mark Zagunis gave Myrtle Beach the lead on a single to left, and McKinney drove in another run with a base hit to right field, capping the inning, and putting the Pelicans ahead 6-4.

The Dash got two back in the eighth, but the Pelicans plated two more in the ninth. McKinney drove in his third run of the game ,and Jacob Rogers widened the gap with a sacrifice fly.

With two strikeouts and a ground out, Zach Cates shut the door for his first save, throwing two frames while walking two.

Torrez (2-2) tossed five complete innings, striking out four and walking three while taking no decision. Of the four runs the Dash scored, only three were earned off of the right-hander. Pugliese (2-0) took his second win after two innings out of the bullpen.
