Miller Multi-Homer Game and Solid Pitching Forces Split with P-Nats

May 11, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

Woodbridge, Va.-Brandon Miller slugged two home runs, while the Potomac Nationals utilized strong pitching from Dakota Bacus, Erik Davis and Tyler Mapes to hand the Frederick Keys a 5-1 loss on Monday night at Pftizner Stadium. The setback means a split of the four-game set for the Keys, who were limited to just five hits on the night.

After failing to capitalize on a two-out double by Stephen Perez in the first, Potomac plated a pair in the second off Mitch Horacek. With two outs, Khayyan Norfork singled to send up Miller, who homered on the first pitch he saw to make it 2-0. Two innings later, Miller added a solo shot down the leftfield line. Ending the night 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, the former Samford Bulldog became the second player to record a two-homer game off Keys pitching this year. Wilmington's Zane Evans was the first to accomplish the feat on April 26 at Nymeo Field.

Bacus (1-0) limited the orange and black to just one run on two hits over five innings to go along with a season-high seven strikeouts. Highly efficient through three stanzas (39 pitches) Bacus' lone speed bump came in the fourth. With one out Drew Dosch singled to send up Trey Mancini, who stroked an RBI double down the leftfield line. It was his 15th extra-base hit of the season, the most by any Carolina Leaguer.

Mancini later advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Keys could not capitalize. Adrian Marin grounded into a fielder's choice, which saw Mancini get thrown out trying to score and Anthony Caronia struck out to strand runners at first and second.

Ahead 3-1, the P-Nats added two more runs in the sixth. Horacek (2-3) started the inning and walked Spencer Kieboom and John Wooten after he missed on several close pitches. Drew Ward then grounded out to advance both men into scoring position. Keys skipper Orlando Gomez would call on Jimmy Yacabonis, who allowed an RBI single to Norfork, while a wild pitch brought in Wooten to make it a four-run game.

Horacek would be tagged with all five runs over 5.1 innings. He walked three and struck out eight.

In their final five trips to bat, Frederick would be limited to just three hits. On a Major League rehab assignment, Davis gave up just one hit over two scoreless innings and Mapes followed with two clean frames to go along with three strikeouts.

The Keys roadtrip continues on Tuesday night when the team visits the Lynchburg for the second time in 2015. Right-hander David Hess (1-2, 4.40) makes the start for the Keys, while the Hillcats have not announced their starting pitcher. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. from City Stadium and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return to Nymeo Field on May 15, when Potomac comes to town.
