Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats' (21-23) ninth-inning rally fell one run short Monday night as they dropped a 6-5 decision to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (18-26) at Five County Stadium.

Carolina saw a 3-2 lead dissipate to a 5-3 deficit by one swing of the bat. West Tenn's first baseman Marshall Hubbard hit a three-run homer 370 feet to right-centerfield in the eighth inning to give the Diamond Jaxx their first lead of the night.

The Mudcats scored the first three runs in the game. Lee Mitchell brought two of those runs in by a third inning, two-out bases-loaded double. Starter Chris Volstad and the Mudcats tried to preserve that lead, which stayed until Hubbard's three-run shot.

West Tenn clawed back with a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh innings. The Diamond Jaxx added an insurance run in the ninth by a Brent Johnson RBI double.

Carolina would threaten in the home portion of the ninth with the tying run batting at the plate. Grant Psomas and Eric Riggs both combined for RBI singles to bring the game within a run. However, with runners on the corners, Chase Lambin struck out to end the game. Lambin had three hits including an RBI double in the first.

Nestor suffered his sixth blown save, falling to 1-4 with the loss. Volstad gets his second no decision lasting six innings, allowing one run. Brodie Downs registered his first win of the season, as Diamond Jaxx closer Mumba Rivera notched his second save.

Both teams will try to take the five game series tomorrow night at 7:15. Carolina will send lefty Blake McGinley (3-7, 4.61) as he faces Andy Baldwin (3-10, 4.42).
