Samardzija to start for Smokies tonight

Sevierville, Tennessee -- The Tennessee Smokies Professional Baseball Club, the Class AA Southern League Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce that newly acquired right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija is scheduled to start on Monday August 6th. Tennessee will face the Montgomery Biscuits at Smokies Park with game time set for 7:15 pm.

Samardzija joined the Tennessee Smokies from Class A Daytona this past week, along with RHP Mitch Atkins and OF Matt Camp. Jeff was signed to a five-year Major League contract in January after a very distinguished career as a wide receiver for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. Samardzija is listed as the fourth-best Cubs minor-league prospect by Baseball America, and had spent the entire 2007 season in Daytona before his call-up to the Smokies.

Jeff will be available for a post-game interview session in the home clubhouse waiting area for interested media outlets for 10-15 minutes.

The Smokies have an off day on Tuesday August 7th, then return to Smokies Park for a five-game set against the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx from Wednesday 8/8 through Sunday 8/12.
