Southern League Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Awards

August 6, 2007 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

Hitter of the Week

ADAM HEETHER, 3B, HUNTSVILLE STARS

Heether tied for the league lead with nine RBI during the week, helping the Stars win five times in six games and build a 2 ½-game lead atop the North Division. It was the second offensive honor in a three-week span for Heether, who has been on a tear since getting new contact lenses about five weeks ago. On July 31, the 25-year-old Heether had three hits, including a two-run homer and a two-run double, to complete a month in which he ranked second in the Southern League with a .359 average and third with 22 RBI. His offensive prowess carried into August, as he legged out a go-ahead three-run triple in the seventh inning of a 6-5 victory at Mississippi on Saturday. It was one of three hits that evening for Heether, who then scored twice in the Stars' 3-1 triumph the next day. A native of Ripon, CA, Heether has batted .386 (44-for-114) in his last 32 games to raise his overall average from .256 to .301.

Pitcher of the Week

DALE THAYER, RHP, MONTGOMERY BISCUITS

With Thayer getting at least the final three outs on four occasions, the Biscuits won six times during the week to creep within two games of front-running Jacksonville in the South Division. After Montgomery had lost eight times in a nine-game span, Thayer worked two perfect innings to emerge the winner in a 9-3, 10-inning triumph at Birmingham on July 30. Thayer improved to 9-0 in 2007 and extended his winning streak to 11 games dating to last season. Two nights later, the 26-year-old Thayer got the final four outs to preserve a 3-2 victory over the Barons. A native of Huntington Beach, CA, Thayer diffused a bases-loaded situation on Friday by inducing a double play to end the eighth inning. Although he surrendered a leadoff homer in the ninth, Thayer rebounded to retire the next three batters and record the save in a 6-5 triumph at Tennessee. It was the 20th save of the season for Thayer, who became the first Biscuit to reach that plateau. Thayer, who topped the circuit with 27 saves in both 2005 and 2006, capped the week with a perfect ninth inning on Sunday to nail down his league-leading 21st save.
