Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, AL - The BayBears lost 9-8 Monday to the Birmingham Barons, in a game they led at one time 5-0. The BayBears scored five runs in five innings off Birmingham starter Kyle McCullough, who was making his first Double-A start after a call up from Single-A Winston-Salem. The BayBears bullpen allowed seven runs from the sixth inning on, spoiling a strong start by Max Scherzer, who allowed one run in 5.2 innings of work.

Offensively, the BayBears scored three times in the bottom of the ninth after Birmingham's four-run top of the ninth. Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run triple, and then scored on a wild pitch by Oneili Perez. Gonzalez went 4-for-4 in the loss with a walk, finishing a double shy of a cycle. Aaron Cunningham had three hits, including two doubles, pushing his average to .429 after six games with Mobile. Cunningham was playing against many former teammates; he was acquired by the Diamondbacks in a trade in June from the Chicago White Sox system.

The BayBears and Barons end their series Tuesday at 7:05 PM, with Mobile RHP Brooks Brown (2-1) pitching against Birmingham LHP Gio Gonzalez (7-5). The game ends a ten-game homestand at Hank Aaron Stadium, with the BayBears trying to finish the homestand with five wins and five losses. The BayBears now stand in third place, 9.5 games behind first place Jacksonville, who lost in Chattanooga Monday.

Former BayBear Mike Thompson was re-called to the Major Leagues by San Diego Sunday, and pitched for the Padres in the ten-run fifth inning for the St. Louis Cardinals Monday.
