Stars Hand Braves Fifth Straight Loss
August 6, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
The Mississippi Braves lost their fifth straight game and their fourth straight against Huntsville Monday night at Trustmark Park. The 3,110 fans in attendance saw Huntsville put up four runs in the second inning and cruise to a 5-3 win over the M-Braves. Though the M-Braves pitchers struck out 14 batters, the offense couldn't get it going.
Huntsville jumped out to a four run lead in the top of the second as they reeled off three singles, a walk, and a double with one out to plate four runs. The exclamation point in the inning came when pitcher Steve Hammond ripped a bases loaded double to left-center field that brought Brendan Katin and Steve Moss to the plate. Diory Hernandez attempted to throw Hammond out at second and threw the ball away allowing Alcides Escobar to score from third and push the Stars lead to 4-0.
The M-Braves cut the lead in half in an interesting third inning. Carl Loadenthal started the inning with a double to left and came in to score from second on an infield single by Diory Hernandez. After a Kala Ka'aihue walk, Josh Burrus skied a fly ball to left that Ryan Crew couldn't locate allowing Hernandez to score the Braves second run. After three, Huntsville was up, 4-2.
Hammond was at it again in the fourth as he started things off with a bloop single to center. Apparently that wasn't enough as he stole second, his third steal of the year, to get into scoring position. Hammond came in to score on a single by Crew to give Huntsville a 5-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, Matt Young laced a two-out single into left-center and Van Pope ripped a double to right-center to score Young and cut the lead to 5-3.
Mississippi's Kelvin Villa gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits in four innings of work. He fell to 7-9 on the season. Michael Nix was outstanding as he threw three scoreless innings of relief. Rich Scalamandre and Jose Ascanio combined to throw two shutout innings.
Huntsville starter Steve Hammond held the M-Braves to two runs on seven hits in seven innings to earn his seventh W of '07. Robert Hinton threw one scoreless and Luis Pena gave up a run to the Braves in the ninth, but held on to record his eighth save of the season and his third of this series.
Mississippi and Huntsville will wrap up this five-game series tomorrow night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. Francisley Bueno gets the nod for the M-Braves while lefty Sam Narron will go for Huntsville. Tuesday nights are Trustmark Two for Tuesday when all field and berm level seats, hot dogs, fountain drinks, and popcorn will be two-for-one.
