Chattanooga, Tenn. - Starter Matthew Maloney allowed three hits with nine strikeouts leading the Chattanooga Lookouts (54-61, 25-20) to a 5-3 win over the Jacksonville Suns (70-45, 29-16) on Monday night, clinching a series win in front of 2,072 at AT&T Field.
Jacksonville entered Monday two games ahead of the Montgomery Biscuits in the second half South Division race. The Suns finished with a 4-6 record in the final 10-game road trip of 2007.
The Lookouts scored in the first inning against Suns starter Zach Hammes without a hit. Hammes walked three and dealt two wild pitches, the second of which scored Adam Rosales to open a 1-0 Lookouts lead.
The Suns jumped into the lead in the second inning against Lookouts starter Matthew Maloney. Following an A.J. Ellis walk, Alberto Concepcion connected for his 11th homerun of the season to put the Suns up 2-1. Maloney rebounded by putting down 14 of the next 15 Suns hitters in order.
Chattanooga's offense took advantage of Hammes again in the fourth inning. With two men on and one out Luis Bolivar singled home Daniel Dorn to tie the game 2-2. Following a sacrifice bunt, Adam Rosales doubled home Shaun Cumberland and Bolivar to open a 4-2 advantage.
Hammes left the game after four innings after allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. B.J. LaMura pitched three shutout innings behind LaMura, allowing only one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.
Jacksonville broke the string of outs from Maloney in the sixth inning when Kevin Howard hit a two-out, solo homerun, cutting the Chattanooga lead to 4-3.
Maloney left the game after eight innings, while allowing three runs on only three hits with nine strikeouts.
The Lookouts added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Daniel Dorn blasted a leadoff homerun off of Alvis Ojeda to end the scoring at 5-3.
Maloney (1-1) got the win for Chattanooga while Hammes (5-6) fell in the loss for Jacksonville. Josh Roenicke (4) saved the game by pitching the ninth inning.
