Carolina Mudcats News Release
Jacksonville, FL --- Mike Stanton homered twice to lead the Jacksonville Suns past the Carolina Mudcats 5-4 at the Baseball Grounds on Tuesday night.
Stanton, who connected for a pair of solo homers against Carolina starter Alexander Smit (L, 1-4), now leads professional baseball with 20 home runs, including seven against Carolina pitching. It was his third multi-homer game in 12 contests against the Mudcats in 2010.
Carolina had tied the Suns (33-19) with a run in the second on a grounder by Denis Phipps. The Suns struck for three in the third against Smit thanks to a two-run double by Chris Hatcher, then a two-out single by Ryan Curry. However, Carolina (23-29) picked up a run in the fourth after a triple by Mike Costanzo and sac fly from Devin Mesoraco, then a two-run homer from Kris Negron in the fifth. But Stanton connected for a rocketed line drive homer in the fifth with two outs to give the Suns a 5-4 lead.
Tom Koehler (W, 6-0) worked just five innings to remain unbeaten for the Suns. Three Jacksonville relievers combined for four scoreless innings on one hit to preserve the victory. Matt Peterson (S, 11) notched his league-leading 11th save with a perfect ninth inning.
Carolina dropped its fourth straight game and fell to 0-7 at the Baseball Grounds this season.
Scott Carroll (0-1, 1.74) starts Wednesday afternoon against Andrew Miller (0-1, 8.03) at 1:05 PM ET.
