Mudbugs Beat Back RiverKings Comeback Attempt

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Bossier-Shreveport scored three straight goals before the Mississippi RiverKings could answer and held back two comeback attempts in a 5-3 victory in Central Hockey League action at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.

Mississippi saw a two-game winning streak stopped and Bossier-Shreveport ended a three-game losing streak in picking up its 19th victory of the season (19-9-0). The RiverKings fell to 12-12-1 for the year.

First period goals from Jeff Martens and Brett Smith (power play goals) and a second period tally from David Rutherford gave the Mudbugs a 3-0 lead before rookie Chris Auger scored his second goal in as many nights, this time shorthanded at 6:49 to start the RiverKings' first comeback attempt.

Chris Richards scored the second RiverKings goal with 50 seconds left in the middle period to get Mississippi within 3-2 Bossier-Shreveport going into the third period.

But Mudbugs' forward Shawn Limpright blocked a clearing play and beat RiverKings goaltender Larry Sterling unassisted at 1:14 of the third period to retake a two goal lead at 4-2.

Mississippi was not done, however, as Jeff Christian poked in a loose in the crease area for his sixth goal of the year with less than five minutes remaining to get the RiverKings back within one goal again, this time at 4-3.

However, Bossier-Shreveport finished the scoring for the night when Jeff Kyrzakos netted a shorthanded goal with just over three minutes remaining for the final 5-3 score.

Sterling saw his record fall to 5-4-1 with the loss, stopping 21 of 26 Mudbugs' shots on goal. John DeCaro earned his eighth win (8-3-0) with a 37 save effort.

Mississippi was 0-for-5 on the power play and stopped four of five Bossier-Shrevport power play chances. Each team scored a shorthanded goal. giving Mississippi five shorties for the season and seven scored by Bossier-Shreveport.

The RiverKings out shot the Mudbugs 40-26 for the contest.

Up next, the RiverKings play host to Bloomington's Prairie Thunder in a 7:05 PM clash Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The teams will meet again in Illinois Wednesday night before Christmas.
