Mud Hens Take Series Finale over Clippers

August 25, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens capitalized on 12 hits Sunday in their 4-2 win at Huntington Field.

Taking the final of a three-game series against the Columbus Clippers, who've already clinched the International League West Division earlier in the week, Toledo would pick up its 14th win overall and seventh on the road in the month of August.

Six of the nine Mud Hens hitters registered two hits, including recently optioned Jeimer Candelario, whose fifth inning solo home run gave him seven total in 30 Triple-A games this year.

Zac Reininger (3-3, 4.47 ERA) surrendered two runs on seven hits in his third spot start dating back to August 7 but just his fourth of his minor-league career.

Reininger, who's had three stints in the major-leagues with Detroit in 2019, pitched a season-high 5.0 innings and struck out five for the win.

Columbus starter Michael Peoples (9-6, 4.15 ERA) drew his second loss in his three recent appearances against Toledo. The 2012 Cleveland Indians 14th-round pick threw 5.0 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits.

The Mud Hens have now seven of their previous nine games.

What Happened:

Jacob Robson led off the second inning and would hit his ninth home run of the season to left field.

The 24-year-old outfielder has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, batting 11-for-51 with 11 RBIs.

Four singles notched by the Columbus in its next at-bat was limited to one run on a Dioner Navarro line drive.

Toledo managed to scrounge another run in the third.

With the bases loaded and one out, Frank Schwindel grounded into a fielder's choice while Chad Sedio reached home.

Two days following his pitching-debut for the Mud Hens, in which he became the first non-position player in five years to record a hit, Schwindel finishes the weekend series with four RBIs for 24 on the year.

Sedio's fourth inning double to the right field corner nearly resulted in his seventh RBI since transferring from High-A Lakeland but the throw home by Connor Marabell would beat out a sliding Pete Kozma.

Both teams traded runs in the fifth on the Candelario solo homer and a single from Mark Mathias before Christin Stewart pulled a 3-0 pitch to right field for the two-run lead.

In the bottom half of the seventh, Mud Hens' Victor Alcantara was relieved for Daniel Stumpf with one out and the bases loaded.

Entering the game yielding the lowest WHIP (0.77) and second-lowest ERA (0.77) among active team pitchers, Stumpf struck out consecutive hitters to end the jam.

Veteran left-hander Caleb Thielbar also struck out one in a hitless ninth inning for his third save of the season.

What's Next:

Tyler Alexander (4-9, 5.63 ERA) is probable to start Monday in the first of a four-game series against the Indianapolis Indians.

Opening pitch from Victory Field is at 7:05 p.m. (EST).
