Mud Hens Get Third Shutout Win of the Year

Columbus, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens pounded the Columbus Clippers 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park in Columbus.

A pair of lefties started for the Mud Hens and Clippers. For Toledo, Locke St. John made his second start of the season. Kirk McCarty carried a 5-0 record into Sunday's game for the Clippers, but would not come away with his record still perfect.

The Mud Hens once again scored first in this one, similarly to last night. After a leadoff walk to Zack Short, Kody Clemens hit an opposite field home run that left the yard and put Toledo up by two. Lefty starter McCarty for Columbus struck out the side, but not before the damage was done.

Left-hander St. John took the mound with an early 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first. He struck out the first two hitters he faced en route to an easy 1-2-3 inning.

On the first pitch of the second inning, Christin Stewart hit a drive to left that hit the yellow line at the top of the wall and counted as the third Mud Hens run of the game. Peterson doubled in the same inning, but nothing more came of it.

Both teams went quietly in the third inning as McCarty recorded his first scoreless frame and St. John pitched his second 1-2-3 inning of the game. His day would end after three, allowing two hits and no runs as Angel De Jesus took over in the fourth.

De Jesus found himself in a jam in the fourth after allowing a single and issuing a walk. With runners on first and second, De Jesus balked and moved those runners both into scoring position. On a beautiful back foot slider, Nolan Jones swung and missed to go down on strikes for the second out of the inning. He then induced a weak pop-up to end the threat with the score still sitting at 3-0.

With two outs in the fifth inning and a runner on first, Ian Krol replaced De Jesus. Facing Gimenez, who came into the game with home runs in six straight games, Krol fell behind in the count, but got Gimenez to ground into a fielders' choice to end the inning with Toledo still leading by three.

In the sixth, the Hens loaded them up after a walk, a single, and a hit by pitch. Peterson singled to center to score one and Short followed it up with a three-run homer to left-center to really break this one open with Toledo out in front 7-0.

After 1.1 scoreless innings of work from Krol, Wladimir Pinto took over in the seventh for the Mud Hens. He allowed a pair of hits, but struck out the side. After Toledo went down quietly in the top of the eighth, Pinto returned for his second inning of work. He sent the Clippers down in order and picked up two more strikeouts, tying his season-best mark of five in a single appearance.

In the top of the ninth, Renato Nunez hit his fourth homer since last Sunday, a solo shot to left that extended the lead to eight for Toledo.

Lefty Miguel Del Pozo came in to pitch the ninth and put this one in the win column for Toledo. Jones grounded out to start the inning. Del Pozo walked the next batter, but bounced back to strike out Lopez and got a ground ball to Short to finish this one off.

What's Next:

The Toledo Mud Hens return home to host the Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday at Fifth Third Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Hens Notes:

Renato Nunez extended his hitting streak to seven straight games with a single in the seventh.

Christin Stewart recorded three hits, his second straight three hit game.

Sunday's win was the Mud Hens third shutout victory of the season.
