Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, NE - Omaha Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas was announced today as one of five finalists under consideration by USA Today as its Minor League Player of the Year. The winner will be selected in an online vote at www.minorleagueplayer@usatoday.com . The winner will be announced in September.

The 21-year old Moustakas is in his fourth professional season after being Kansas City's 1st round pick (2nd overall) in the 2007 draft out of Chatsworth High in California. He opened this season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas and tore up the Texas League, batting .347 with 21 home runs and 76 RBI in 66 games. That earned him a selection to the North Division team in the Texas League All-Star game.

Moustakas was promoted to Omaha following the Triple-A All-Star break, joining the Royals July 15. In 39 contests at the highest Minor League level, he's batting .281 with seven homers and 23 RBI. Entering tonight's opener of a crucial five-game series vs. the first-place Iowa Cubs, Moustakas has hits in 13 of his last 14 tilts, batting at a .344 (21-for-61) clip with two round-trippers and nine RBI.

Between the Double-A and Triple-A levels this year, the lefty-swinger is batting .322 (137-for-426) with 28 home runs and 99 RBI in 105 games. In July, Moustakas was ranked by Baseball America as the 12th-best prospect in Minor League Baseball.

Other candidates for the USA Today Minor League Player of the Year include outfielder Dominic Brown of the Phillies, first baseman Freddie Freeman of the Braves, pitcher Jeremy Hellickson of the Rays and pitcher Michael Pineda of the Mariners.

The Omaha Royals, currently in a second-place tie with Memphis and 2.5 games behind Iowa, host Ryne Sandberg's Cubs tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Rosenblatt Stadium.
