
Luebke Spins Gem as Beavers Win Fifth Straight

TACOMA, Wash. - Cory Luebke tossed eight shutout innings and Wily Mo Peña supplied the offense with a solo homer and an RBI double as the Portland Beavers won their season-high fifth straight game by defeating the Tacoma Rainiers 2-0 at Cheney Stadium Wednesday night.
Luebke (5-0) extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings, yielding five hits and striking out four while issuing no walks. He allowed just two runners to reach second base and improved his overall record to 10-1 in 17 starts between Portland (53-79) and Class AA San Antonio this season.
Everth Cabrera and Jody Gerut also had hits for the Beavers, who were held to four hits but worked seven walks.
The Beavers also matched a modern franchise record by winning their eighth straight road game.
Matt Mangini led the Rainiers (68-63) with two hits as Tacoma failed to defend its home turf against the Beavers for just the third time in the last 17 meetings at Cheney.
Mauricio Robles (1-1) struck out eight Beavers in six innings, but issued six walks and allowed two runs on three hits.
Luis Perdomo worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his first save.
The Beavers and Rainiers continue the five-game series Thursday night at 7 p.m. (Pacific).
NOTES: Portland also won eight straight road games, Aug. 26-Sept. 2, 2004 ... Beavers outfielder Aaron Cunningham, who entered the game with 10 RBIs in his last three games, went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts ... Portland's regular closer Adam Russell was unavailable after saving the team's last two games ... every member of the Beavers' starting rotation has earned a win during the current five-game win streak ... it was Portland's fifth shutout of the season ... two of Portland's three wins against the Rainiers have come via shutout.
