Astros Claim Infielder Downs off Waivers

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros announced today that the club has claimed infielder Matt Downs off of waivers from San Francisco. Downs has been assigned to Triple A Round Rock and will report to the Express tomorrow. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Ed Wade.

Downs, 26, was claimed by the Astros from the Giants after being designated for assignment on August 22. He appeared in 29 games for San Francisco this season, hitting .244 (19x78) with one home run and seven RBI. Downs started 18 games for the Giants this season, all coming at second base. He's spent his last two months in the Giants minor league system and has combined to hit .255 (52x204) with seven homers and 30 RBI in 58 games with Triple A Fresno and the Rookie Arizona League Giants. He's spent parts of two Major League seasons with San Francisco (2009-10) and owns a career .300 (482x1606) minor league average since being drafted in 2006.

The Astros 40-man roster is now full at 40.
