Manitoba Moose News Release

IMPOSSIBLE TO SOLVE: The Moose fired 37 shots on Oklahoma City Barons goalie Martin Gerber on Saturday night. But despite the barrage, including 18 shots in the game's first period, the Moose were held scoreless in a 4-0 loss. The 37 shots taken Saturday were the most in a shutout defeat since Mar. 6/04 when Manitoba was shutout by Syracuse 1-0, despite outshooting the Crunch 50-9. Syracuse's goaltender in that game was Pascal Leclaire.

YOUNG RELIABLE: Forward Stefan Schneider is the second youngest player on the team, so making the Moose roster in October was a feat in itself. Schneider has since proven to be one of the team's most dependable penalty killers and reliable depth players. He's currently riding a streak of nine games with an even or plus rating. This is especially impressive when considering he's on Manitoba's top penalty killing unit. In 20 games, Schneider has two goals and a +1 rating.

A NIGHT JUST FOR MIKE: The Manitoba Moose announced this week that Saturday, Feb. 12 will be Mike Keane Night. On the date that the Moose host the San Antonio Rampage, they will be honouring the former captain that spent five full seasons and played in 365 games with the Moose. Keane is one of Manitoba's most admired hockey champions, with three Stanley Cups to his name, and led the Moose to their most successful season in franchise history in 2008-09.

BRIEF STOP AT HOME

There was no time for tired legs last week as the Manitoba Moose wrapped up a brief four-game road trip through the AHL's West Division before returning home to face the Oklahoma City Barons for the first time on Dec. 3 & 4. Last week's road trip took the Moose to Chicago, where former Moose Jason Krog sunk a dagger late in the game to even up the score before the Wolves took a shootout result. Then they travelled to Milwaukee the following night where the Moose came out short in a high-scoring battle with the Admirals. The weekend series with the Barons provided mixed results and by Sunday, Manitoba found themselves tied fourth in the North Division at 27 points.

Tuesday, November 30, 2010: Manitoba 1, Chicago 2 (SO) Current Chicago Wolves captain Jason Krog spent the 2008-09 season with the Manitoba Moose and helped them reach the AHL Calder Cup Finals for the first time that year. Last Tuesday, Krog haunted his former team by scoring with 2:25 left in the third period to send the game into overtime then a shootout. The Moose were stoned five times in the shootout by Wolves goalie Peter Mannino and one converted attempt by Darren Haydar in the fifth round of the shootout was all it took for Chicago to wrap up the 2-1 win.

Wednesday, December 1, 2010: Manitoba 3, Milwaukee 6 This game marked Moose head coach Claude Noel's return to Milwaukee, where he previously won a Calder Cup Championship and served as either an assistant or head coach to the Admirals for seven years. It wasn't a memorable return for the coach and his new squad. The Moose and Admirals traded a flurry of five goals within seven minutes and 25 seconds during the second period. In the end the Moose couldn't outscore the potent Admirals offence.

Friday, December 3, 2010: Manitoba 3, Oklahoma City 2 (SO) The Moose and Barons proved to be an even match through nearly the entire game. Through 40 minutes, Manitoba and Oklahoma City were tied 2-2 and were even in shots, 21-21. The breaking point came in the second last round of the shootout as Manitoba's Sergei Shirokov was the only shooter on either team to convert in the shootout round.

Saturday, December 4, 2010: Manitoba 0, Oklahoma City 4 The rematch told a far different story than Friday night's 3-2 shootout win for the home team. The story of Saturday's game was Barons goaltender Martin Gerber. The Swiss goaltender stopped all 37 shots he faced from the Moose on his way to a 4-0 shutout victory. The shutout result marked the third time in 10 home games this season that the Moose have been shutout.

The Moose find themselves in the Sun Belt this week taking on the Texas Stars on Tuesday, then the Oklahoma City Barons on Friday and San Antonio Rampage on Saturday. The four-game trip wraps up on Tuesday, Dec. 14, back in Texas.
