Moose Prevail over Rockford in OT
March 10, 2019 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (29-26-3-2) came back to defeat the Rockford IceHogs (27-24-4-6) by a 2-1 score on Sunday afternoon at Bell MTS Place. The Moose got out to a quick start, aided by an early power play, and recorded the first five shots of the contest. Unlike Saturday's game, Manitoba was unable to open the scoring in the first period. Hunter Fejes did tip a puck to the back of the net on the third Moose power play of the frame, but it was immediately waved off by the referee for a high-stick. At the other end of the ice, Mikhail Berdin stopped all 10 shots he faced as the clubs wrapped the first tied 0-0.
The second period saw the defensive struggle continue as the teams combined for 14 shots in the frame. Manitoba nearly started the scoring when Brent Pedersen knocked down a pass and opened up Alexis D'Aoust in front of the Rockford goal. D'Aoust moved to his backhand, but Kevin Lankinen stuck with him and made the stop. Later on the shift, Pedersen got some room in the slot and ripped a shot off the post. Following the Moose chances, Rockford opened the scoring as Peter Holland was able to walk in and fire a shot in off the post for his 23rd goal of the season with 6:40 left in the period. That goal held up as the only tally in the frame as the visitors took a 1-0 advantage to the third.
Rockford maintained its lead through the final frame until the Moose were finally able to break through on a power play. With the IceHogs in the box for high-sticking, Manitoba only needed seven seconds on the man advantage for Seth Griffith to set up a Mason Appleton one-timer to tie the game with 7:13 to go in regulation. Neither team found a way to break the deadlock, and off to overtime they went. The extra frame lasted 51 seconds, with the Moose controlling the puck nearly the entire time. An Appleton shot bounced high in the air and found the stick of Michael Spacek, who was able to get Lankinen to bite on a fake before going upstairs for the winner. Manitoba's win moved the club within one point of the IceHogs in the Central Division standings.

Defenceman Cameron Schilling - "It was an interesting game. It was kind of like a typical Sunday game. It was back and forth, not a lot of jam there I think. It kind of picked up pace there in the third period. I think both teams kind of realized the game was kind of up for grabs. It was a huge goal on the power play there to get us the tie and then win it in overtime. So, I think the biggest thing is we've got to stay patient, but at the same time have a little bit of urgency, because these [games] are must wins for us."
Forward Mason Appleton on combining with Michael Spacek for their third overtime winner - "Yeah, actually at the start of overtime I said that to [Michael Spacek] 'it's just like old times, let's go get one'. So, it was great to connect once again. It was even better to get that win. Rockford's a team that's just a head of us in the standings, so it was a huge weekend for us."
