Willmar Stingers News Release

WILLMAR, Minn. - After an elating series victory over the league-best Waterloo Bucks, the Stingers were brought down to Earth by the Mankato MoonDogs in a 12-4 loss. The MoonDogs started hot, scoring ten runs in the first three frames as the Willmar offense, despite having a good number of base runners, could not manage to crawl back into the game until it was too late.

Mankato finished the game as the third-best hitting team in the league, but early on the MoonDogs looked like the world beaters of the Northwoods League. Mankato scored four in the 1st, and three runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Sheldon Lee, who came into the game with an exceptional record and ERA had his roughest outing of the season, lasting just two innings. Josh Matheson had two sparkling innings of relief late in the game, limiting Mankato to just one hit while logging three strikeouts.

Danny Brennan earned the CDI player of the game honors after several games out of the lineup. The outfielder out of St. Louis walked twice, and drove in three runs. Brennan's base sacrifice fly in the 6th inning put the Stingers on the board and his two-RBI double in the 9th gave the 1,286 fans in attendance something to cheer for. The Stingers drew a season-high 11 walks on the evening.

Despite the loss, the Stingers remain in position to claim the NWL North Division's wild card playoff spot.

Next, the Stingers will go to Mankato and turn to Andrew Woeck to win game two of the three-game series.
