
Bucks Use Big Inning to Defeat Honkers

(Rochester, MN) - The Waterloo Bucks scored 11 runs in the top of the second inning in a 15-3 win over the Rochester Honkers on Saturday July 20 at Mayo Field.
Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) reached on an error to start the bottom of the first inning and Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) followed with a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs in the inning. Hanawahine scored on a RBI groundout by Max Murphy (Bradley) to give the Honkers an early 1-0 lead.
The Bucks answered by scoring 11 runs and sending 16 batters to the plate in the top of the second inning to take a commanding 11-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by homeruns from David Kerian and Kevin Needham.
Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) singled with one out in the bottom of the second inning and came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Hanawahine. Waterloo answered with one run in the top of the third and two more in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 14-2.
Reid Roper (Illinois) narrowly missed his first homerun of the season when he doubled off of the fence in right-center field in the bottom of the fourth inning and scored on a single from Parker Sullivan (Minnesota State-Mankato) to score Rochester's third run of the game. Kerian hit his second homerun on the night in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 15-3.
Landon Simpson earned the win (4-1) for the Bucks, as he allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings. Quinn Carpenter (Iowa Western) took the loss (0-2) for the Honkers. He allowed nine runs on five hits in 1.2 innings. Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) and Alex Tenorio (Menlo College) each pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Honkers.
Hanawahine picked up a pair of hits on the night to lead Rochester's offense. Burgess, Roper, and Tyler Baker (Wichita State) each doubled on the night.
The two teams will finish up a three-game series at Mayo Field on Sunday July 21 at 1:05 p.m. Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) is scheduled to make the start for Rochester (2-15, 20-32.) Jacob Stone (Weatherford Community College) is slated to be on the mound for Waterloo (15-3, 39-13.) On Sunday, the Honkers will be auctioning off jerseys for Ovarian Cancer Awareness. Sunday's game is the final game before the 2013 Northwoods League All-Star Game on Tuesday July 23, at 7:35 p.m., in Eau Claire, WI.
