Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
In order to be a championship team, sometimes you have to win ugly. In the end it doesn't matter how they got it done, but the Lakeshore Chinooks found a way to overcome two homeruns and subpar defense to scratch out a 6-4 12 inning victory in Wisconsin Rapids Saturday evening.
Seven of the ten runs scored in the ballgame came across due in part to an error or other fielding miscue. The first run came in the second when John Norwood (Vanderbilt University) stole second and scored when Cody Bobbit (Wichita State) reached on a dropped third strike.
Starter Kyle Bouman (Jefferson College) held the Rafters off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when Charlie Curl started the inning with a single and moved to second on an error by first basemen Mike Papi (University of Virginia). A sacrifice bunt and a single tied the game and Jackson Slaid followed with a two-run shot to give the Rafters a 3-1 lead.
Lakeshore came right back to tie things in the seventh with a two spot of their own. Bobbitt and Andrew Stevenson (Louisiana State University) reached base to begin the inning. Bobbitt was thrown out on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher for the first out. Papi then walked to load the bases and Aaron Machbitz (South Dakota State University) hit a hard chopper off the mound that was fielded on a dive by the second baseman but not before Stevenson and Sawyer Polen (Kent State University) came across to score tying things at three.
The game remained tied until the ninth inning when another error came back to bite the Rafters. Stevenson singled to lead off the inning and Polen reached on an error by pitcher Trevor Koehn. Papi popped out to the pitcher for the first out of the inning and Machbitz struck out for out number two before Mike Hollenbeck (Illinois State University) delivered with a go-ahead RBI single to make it 4-3 Lakeshore.
After a clean eighth-inning, Jack Landwehr (Illinois State University) came on for his second inning of relief to try and close things down in the ninth. His evening was promptly spoiled when Jackson Slaid took him deep for his second homerun of the game to lead off the inning. After a groundout, a double, and a strikeout Ladwehr was removed from the game in favor of Tyler Thicke (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee) who came on to get the final out of the inning.
The Chinooks put two on in the eleventh but Hollenbeck grounded into a double play to end the inning. A single by Elijah Roundtree (Missouri Baptist) and a walk by Jared Fon (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater) put two on base with only one out in the top of the 12th inning. Bobbitt was retired on strikes so it was up to Andrew Stevenson to come through. He reached on a fielder's choice ground ball that was promptly thrown away by the shortstop allowing Roundtree to score the go-ahead run. Back to back walks plated Fon from third to make it 6-4 Lakeshore.
Tyler Thicke came on for his fourth inning of work and got the first two batters without trouble. An error by Bobbitt at second base extended the inning but Thicke came back to record the strikeout to seal the victory.
Both teams are headed to Kapco Park for game two of this home and home series to finish things up before the All-Star break. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05. The first 1,000 fans to enter the gate will receive a Gill Chinook bobble head presented by GS Design.
