Montgomery, Robinson Trigger Win over Condors
December 22, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Brock Montgomery had a goal and an assist while goaltender Josh Robinson turned aside 25 of 26 shots Saturday night as the Idaho Steelheads edged the Bakersfield Condors, 3-1, in an entertaining contest played in front of 4,245 fans at Boise's CenturyLink Arena.
With the win, Idaho improves its overall record to 14-8-4, good for 32 points in the ECHL standings. Bakersfield drops to 8-15-1.
Idaho dodged bullets in the first period, giving the visiting Condors three power-play opportunities as Bakersfield outshot Idaho, 13-5, in the opening frame but neither team scored.
The Steelheads would break through in the early stages of the second period on a quick, two-on-one rush as Austin Fyten's pass from the left wing was punched home under the crossbar by Montgomery at 4:56 of the second period, making it a 1-0 game. The goal snapped a shutout streak for Brossoit spanning four games and 211:17 of game time, about 25 minutes short of the ECHL record. Robinson made the lead hold up with a pair of tremendous saves, one on Chris Collins and one on Nicholas Tremblay, as the Steelheads held the one-goal lead into the third.
Defenseman Etienne Boutet doubled the lead 21 seconds into the third period as his point shot from the left wing appeared to deflect off a body as it skidded by Brossoit. Boutet's second of the season was assisted by Montgomery to make it 2-0. Bakersfield inched closer on a short-handed goal - the fourth allowed by Idaho in the past three games - from George Hughes at the 2:32 mark of the third.
Idaho would clamp down defensively for the next sixteen-plus minutes before Bakersfield pulled Brossoit with just over a minute left in regulation in favor of an extra attacker. As Brossoit vacated his net and skated to the bench, Idaho gained control of the puck in its own defensive zone. James Isaacs fed the puck up the right wing wall to David deKastrozza for an easy, game-clinching empty-net goal with 50 seconds left in the contest.
Robinson improved his personal record to 9-2-1 with the win in net for Idaho. Brossoit was tagged with his first ECHL loss, stopping 18 of 20 shots he faced on the evening. Neither team was able to find the net on the power play, Idaho's power-play unit came up empty on six chances but the penalty-kill unit was a perfect four-for-four.
The Steelheads and Condors meet one final time on Sunday at 5:10 PM before taking a break for the Christmas holiday. Tickets are available by calling the CenturyLink Arena box office at 208-331-8497.
