Cleveland Monsters News Release

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - In the final game of the two teams' 12-game season series, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI by a final score of 5-3. With the win, the Monsters improved to 41-22-6-5 overall this season and with a .628 points percentage, remain alone in second place in the AHL's Central Division standings with two games remaining in the regular season.

The Griffins claimed a 1-0 lead at 5:37 of the opening period when Eric Tangradi deflected home a Nick Jensen shot at even-strength. The Monsters rallied back, however, with a five-on-five John Ramage slapper at 13:28 on feeds from T.J. Tynan and Dean Kukan before Ryan Craig and Justin Falk combined to set up Lukas Sedlak at 19:07 for an even-strength goal that made it 2-1 Lake Erie heading into the middle stanza and extended Sedlak's goal streak to six games.

In the middle frame, Grand Rapids leveled the score with a Jeff Hoggan even-strength goal at 9:54 before the Monsters surged ahead by a score of 3-2 at 12:02 of the period when Sonny Milano re-directed a Ramage point shot, fed by Alex Broadhurst, on the power-play.

Then, Lake Erie's Michael Chaput notched an unassisted marker just 19 seconds later to make it 4-2 before Sedlak buried his second of the game at 6:59 of the final period on an even-strength deflection off the stick of Dean Kukan. A late goal from Grand Rapids right wing Mark Zengerle at 19:53 made things a bit more respectable for the Griffins, but the Monsters prevailed by a final score of 5-3 to cap their season series vs. Grand Rapids at 5-3-3-1.

Lake Erie's Joonas Korpisalo improved to 7-8-2 in net for the Monsters this season by virtue of a 20-save performance, while Griffins net-minder Tom McCollum made 20 saves on 25 shots faced in defeat.
