Falcons Lose Tight Battle to Providence

Providence, RI - The Springfield Falcons lost by a score of 3-1 against the Providence Bruins on Wednesday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

The Bruins tallied the first strike of the game with a slap shot from Rob O'Gara. His first professional goal was scored at 9:47 with assists from Frank Vatrano and Seth Griffith. The Falcons successfully killed the period's only penalty to Jordan Szwarz for interference just 1:53 into the game. Springfield netminder Adin Hill made ten saves in the frame.

Griffith extended the Bruins lead with his 24th goal of the season on a rebound at 4:52. The initial shot came from the wing off the stick of Brian Ferlin. Colton Hargrove also assisted on the goal to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead. During the period, the Falcons were able to kill two penalties but could not convert on their only man advantage. Bruins' goalie Jeremy Smith stopped eight shots in the period and all 17 through the two periods. Hill stopped 13 shots in the period, including several one-timers while the team was on the penalty kill.

Neither team scored in the third period until the final two minutes when the teams exchanged goals. With the goaltender pulled, Jordan Szwarz blasted a slap shot past Smith for his twelfth of the year at 18:43. The goal brought the game to a 2-1 score with assists from Brendan Shinnimin and Alex Grant. The Falcons pulled Hill following the goal in attempts to tie the game. Vatrano potted his 34th goal of the year into the empty net with assists from Tommy Cross and Brandon Carlo. Hill stopped 29 shots on 31 attempts and lost his second game of the year. Smith made 27 saves on 28 shots and improved his record to 17-19-4.

The Falcons conclude the regular season with a pair of games at the MassMutual Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. The Block Party on Saturday will be held prior to the game from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. featuring a beer garden, soda, chips, Palazzo Cafe and Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue. Kids in attendance can enjoy the Falcons Slap Shot Game, face painting, and balloon twisters. Live music will be performed by General Gist and the King Ward Falcons' team bus will be on-site for viewing. All fans can enter to shoot for a three-year lease on a 2016 Hyundai Sonata until the opening faceoff. During the first intermission, five fans will be selected at random to shoot for the new car presented by Balise Hyundai.

Sunday's game features Cancer Awareness Night. The team will wear specialty jerseys with a silent auction held on the concourse until the second intermission. Once the second intermission begins, a live auction will commence on the concourse outside Fan Relations (Section 28). The proceeds for the jersey auction will be donated to the Griffin's Friends.
